My bigger gripe was our lapses (holding penalty and a sack) that took us out of field goal range and led to the punts. A single field goal would have spared us from the drama.

Edit: From the 34 yard line, I would have tried the field goal and give Toner the chance to be the hero.

Yes, but that one at least made some sense, unless you think Toner can reliably hit a 57 yard field goal.  It was fourth and 11, so going for it didn’t make a ton of sense, and you would prefer to force the bears to go 90 yards to tie it than 60 yards (and more like 53 if we go for the FG and miss).

I didn't like the call to punt instead of attempt the field goal but many, many teams don't attempt field goals over 50 yards.  I think we have the kicker to justify the attempt but I also remember the impossible 0 for 4 night at Oregon.  I was MUCH more unhappy about the penalty and the team's poor performance in the red zone.  Given the defense's issues (although they were actually decent today) I was satisfied with Shaw's decision to make it tougher for Cal to make their final drive.  Cal was stopped many times by the Stanford defense in the game and had to really grind to make the final drive.  (And yes, the turnovers weren't dumb luck but mostly the result of good play by the Stanford D.) The fact that Cal made it to the end zone was not a forgone conclusion.  They scored 23 total points, they were not destroying us with their offense.  These were two teams that are not great but to describe Shaw's decision as terrible or as outside the normal range of good coaches is ridiculous.  

Proper mood:  Stanford won.  We've got the Axe.

If I'm remembering the same thing you are, this was Shaw, and I *think* it was after the 2016 Rose Bowl. That wasn't a snub of ESPN, however, but more accurately a screwup *by* ESPN. Just as the reporter got to Shaw, he was pulled away to get up on stage for the trophy ceremony, which is no doubt dictated by the network. But I definitely remember the reporter's audible exasperation.
