WBB: Bracketology Stanford Top #1 Seed - TheRicker - 03-08-2021

http://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/bracketology

"Stanford's decisive win over UCLA in the Pac-12 championship game and dominance throughout the tournament is enough to make the Cardinal the No. 1 overall seed. Stanford continues to be the top-ranked team in the NET and now has six top-25 NET wins, tied for best in the country with South Carolina and Texas A&M. That results in UConn being pushed to No. 2 overall, and a win over Marquette in the Big East tournament title game on Monday won't be enough to change that."

UConn fans are split  on Boneyard- half upset that Uconn not #1 (offering all sots of justication),  others saying no big deal, or Stanford earned it

RE: WBB: Bracketology Stanford Top #1 Seed - TheWildJacko - 03-08-2021

I'm skeptical our NET #1 and great record vs. top teams overcomes East Coast bias and UCONN's single loss, but one can hope!

Louisville is 6, Georgia is 13, Kentucky is 19 in the NET rankings. If they are 2-3-4 in our region, they would be expected to be 8, 9 and 16. That's a pretty big disparity! We can't have the true 8th-ranked team because that's UCLA, and also it looks like UCLA is getting bumped to a 3-seed for having 5 losses. Baylor is the final 2 seed. Swapping Louisville into our bracket makes sense because they have the most losses of 4 2-seeds.

Not sure why we don't get Indiana (ranked 9th in the NET) as a 3-seed instead of Georgia (NET 13th), or Gonzaga (NET 16th) instead of Kentucky. In fact, why are Kentucky and Georgia—both SEC teams—3 and 4 in the same region? Looking at the other 3 and 4 seeds, it seems that our only other options (aside from Indiana) were:

- other Pac-12 teams (AZ, UCLA)
- other SEC teams (Arkansas, TN)
- West Virginia (NET 23rd), probably too big a leap for a 4 seed.

So this seems about right.

The correct answer is "no big deal", and that would have been the correct even if UConn gets the overall #1 seed where it matters (from the committee).  There is enough uncertainty in terms of the placement of teams that the only big question is whether Stanford and UConn are on course to meet in the final or some game before the final, and that doesn't change whether STanford is #1 and UConn is #2 or vice versa.

For a fun read: Boneyard responses to Stanford being named #1 overall.

RE: WBB: Bracketology Stanford Top #1 Seed - Papa John - 03-08-2021

Comparison of NET versus AP poll versus Bracketology:

Stanford: NET = 1; AP = 2; 1-seed--Seeding agrees with NET and AP
UCLA: 8; 10; 3-seed--Seeding agrees with AP
Oregon: 10; 23; 6-seed--Seeding agrees with AP
Arizona: 15; 11; 3-seed---Seeding agrees with AP
Oregon State: 36; 28 (receiving votes); 9-seed--seeding agrees with NET
WSU: 44; > 34 (did not receive votes); 10-seed--inconclusive

I know this is an academic exercise, but it's interesting that Bracketology seems to follow AP voters more than NET.

We jumped to #2 in the AP rankings released today

thanks for posting. a variety of opinions on who deserves the top overall seed, i note how respectful they are in general and how respectful they are to stanford in particular. no "i hate tara's."

I've also noticed that "how respectful they are" bit. Good for them.

My favorite posts are the ones that complain about ESPN not being a “bastion of neutrality.” No duh.

The Bone-yard is a well run site. I frequent the General Women's BB subforum a lot as do a few other cardboarders. Everyone is really well-behaved for the most part. If not you will incur the wrath of Husky Nan.

Watching a bit of the Big East tournament final.  UConn looks very good.  Like one of the top teams in the country but not like one of the unbeatable teams they have had in the past.  Marquette looks pretty bad.  Makes me wonder about the quality of the Big East conference.  Marquette looks like it would finish 10th or 11th in the PAC-12.

I also watched the BE final, 2nd half. UConn looks pretty good but not as many playmakers as the Card. Bueckers is a terrific shooter with excellent BB skills. She is their best player but she's only 5'11" and built very much like the Hulls. She cuts alot to the basket like the Hulls and shoots 3s with a quick release. I would expect Anna and the Hulls would make it difficult for her to operate.

Their center is 6'5" and can shoot and move but she doesn't look like a prolific scorer. She's not beefy so wont overpower anyone. Doesn't look like they have anyone notable behind her like our three headed monster, though I may have missed someone.

They have a 3 pt specialist and athletic dribble drive wings who defend well. If we meet, I expect a 15 pt victory.

OST, are there any teams that you think would give us more problems?

Paige Bueckers is their leading scorer at 19.7 ppg, shooting 54% from the field and 47% from long range.
Their center is Olivia Nelson-Ododa, 3rd leading scorer averaging 12.5 ppg, 58% from the field and grabbing 7.8 rpg.

Christyn Williams, the #1 recruit from the Class of '18 is averaging 15.8 ppg at a 48% clip.

Their wing/forward Aaliyah Edwards is their 4th leading scorer at 10.2 ppg, hitting a very efficient 68% of her shots.

They also have Evina Westbrook, transfer from Tennessee, who was the #2 recruit from the Class of '17 and though she is still averaging 9.2 ppg at a 44% FG%, she hasn't made as much of an impact as I thought.

I've only watched one UConn game this season, against South Carolina and their offense runs through Bueckers (obviously) and down the stretch in a close game, it didn't seem like many of their other starters contributed as much as Paige did. But again, it was just a one game sample size against a high quality S. Carolina team

"Squirrel!" he says to the woofing gods as they take interest in this thread.  "Nothing to see here," he notes, unconvincingly.

As for teams to be concerned about... let's hope Maryland is in someone else's bracket.

Hey Farm, thanks for the info. Williams scored 6 or 8 pts in the 2nd half; I think three baskets were off interceptions and a clear court. (That reminds me, they do intercept lazy passes and take it to the rack)

The center looked athletic but not as effective as Ruthie Hebard, or the graduated Cal center. Of course, who is? If Brink stays out of foul trouble, though, she would outscore her.

The three pt specialist can shoot the three; no evidence whether she's as versatile as Jump has become.

Didn't see the Tenn transfer but I may have missed her. I remember she was a big time recruit for Tenn. It didn't work out?

One half really isn't enuf for in depth analysis and prognosis, but I had a good time.
