MBB: Stanford 62 vs Tarleton State 50 - Papa John - 11-09-2021

The Stanford men take on the Tarleton State Texans tonight at 7 pm in Maples Pavilion. I had not heard of Tarleton State before the schedule came out, but apparently they've been D1 for at least a couple of years and play in the WAC. They are not afraid of scheduling road games versus major opponents: their nonconference schedule includes Kansas, Wichita State, Michigan and Gonzaga. However, they seem to have trouble convincing teams to visit Wisdom Gym in Stephenville, TX, as they also play home games versus nonconference foes Paul Quinn, Charleston Southern, Dallas Christian and Southwestern Assemblies of God.

The Texans are coached by Billy Gillispie, the former UTEP, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Kentucky coach, who, according to this article, is not a nice man:

https://collegebasketball.nbcsports.com/2020/03/31/tarleton-states-decision-to-hire-billy-gillispie-is-shameful/

I have no idea what to expect from this year's team given the substantial losses from last year's team, which had two notable wins (Alabama and UCLA) and a truckload of bad losses (not going to list them).

The most optimistic version of me hopes for an NIT bid, which would match Jerod Haase's most successful year at Stanford. But expectations be damned, that won't stop me from cheering on the team. Go Stanford!

The box score for Tarleton's exhibition game says they had 14 steals against Central Christian Bible, surely an overmatched team. Tarleton won 73-50 while shooting only 2-15 from three.

The Tarleton Texans?! Now that should give our team a real test. It bugs me no end
to see how many marshmallow opponents Haase puts on the pre-conference schedule.
If we played more good and excellent teams, we'd have a better chance of being ready
to play tough teams in conference, assuming we have the suitably talented players.
I was always struck by how many good or excellent teams Duke played in its pre-
conference schedule.

Disagree. In fact, I'd argue just the opposite. Stanford's non-conference schedule last season included Alabama, North Carolina and Indiana. That's plenty of powerhouses for a program that is still trying to establish itself. This year, we play Baylor and Texas, two highly ranked opponents. If this were Stanford circa 1999, then yes, playing four or five ranked non-conference teams would be ok by me. That's what the women do because they are legit top ten or top five program.

Given how we're playing, it's good that we're not starting off with a tough team.  Chance to get some game reps for everyone, too.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - BobK - 11-09-2021

Down 26-24 at the half. Unbelievable

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - old spanish trail - 11-09-2021

To tell the truth, they look awful....so far. I assume they will be better than this. Where is the French player?

Given the number of wide open looks TST has had, it should be a bigger deficit.

If we can turn up the D and get some transition points or figure out a way to use our height, the game should turn quickly.

Maxime played near the end of the half.  He may have accidentally challenged a shot by Ingram causing him to miss.  Otherwise, not much to note.

On a side note, Kal lost their opener to UC San Diego. Hopefully we are not in a race to the bottom.

Offense looks rough, as expected. Inexcusable to not be dominating on the boards.

Edit: 18-12 rebounding advantage for Stanford at half, so not too bad...but still should be better.

Ingram is our leading scorer with 8.  We are 1/10 from three.

Thanks. I forgot I had taped. He wasn't in the game yet. Ingram is strong, looks comfortable. Can he shoot the 3 at all?

They lost to UC Riverside a few years ago, too. I really enjoy the other UC campuses getting the best of them.

We really needed a 3 to finally go in.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - martyup - 11-09-2021

I just turned on the game and watched as we tied it up at 35.  Given the opponent, it looks like we're not very good, at least at this point.

Tied at 35, but Tarleton now has the rebounding edge, 23-22. Sigh.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - martyup - 11-09-2021

Well we woke up and are now up 13.  Silva looks pretty good at PG.

The frosh are alright!

Late in the fourth:

Leading RBer, Raynaud
Leading in assists, Silva
Leading scorer, Delaire but Ingram second

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - martyup - 11-09-2021

Kisunus has the worst haircut I've seen since watching Coastal Carolina play football.

RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - BostonCard - 11-09-2021

Silva also leads in turnovers.  But glad it looks like we are pulling this one out.

I don't know why the Texans coach even wears the mask since it's always pulled down under his chin.

We win it 62-50.  WE ARE UNDEFEATED!!
