New Coach. CANDIDATES? - ADPinWDC - 11-20-2021

I don't know how Muir can defend Shaw now...?
Alums are howling on Facebook.

Go get Chris Petersen.
He never had a losing season at BOIS or WASH, and took WASH to the CFPlayoff in 2016.
Posted a 55-26 record at UW.
Played QB for UC Davis in the 80s.

Won the Pac-12 North 2016-18.
Was paid only $5M a year at UW.
He's in a studio now.

Let's think outside the box.  How 'bout Niumatalolo from Navy?

Muir's not gonna fire Shaw. Get over it.

Best we can hope for is Shaw finally firing some of his staff

Chris Petersen isn't coming to Stanford. Not now, not ever. He is in that studio because he wants to be. The day may come when he decides to coach again, but it won't be at Stanford. If you want to win national championships you don't start with Stanford's built-in issues. He doesn't need to prove anything to anybody. He can make lots more money elsewhere.

Taylor is a fascinating case study in how crazy the coaching profession is. Whittingham had fired him after the 2018 season but agreed to keep it quiet to give him an opportunity to land another job. Sure enough, he lands the head job at Sac State and has done amazing there. But if he doesn't land Sac State and a few more weeks go by, his firing from Utah goes public and who knows where he is today - certainly not being mentioned as a candidate for FBS HC jobs!

I think you underestimate the voice of alums and the importance of Big Game.

At least after 2019 there was a sense that the season was an aberration — they were fresh off a conference championship game and indeed the team bounced back in 2020.

My preference, and this will sound odd to you until you wait for it, but my preference would be to keep Shaw for one more year — but only to fire Muir and give a new AD an opportunity to land and hire/fire as needed.

Losing a season is bad, losing The Axe is very bad, but not being competitive in 4+ games including Big Game is pretty close to irredeemable.

Muir is every bit as bad as Shaw, if not worse.

I agree with you Muir needs to be fired more than Shaw, but for entirely different reasons.

If Shaw does some much-needed housecleaning, he buys himself at least a couple years. If he's now willing to clean house, then Muir should fire him but he won't.

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - Goose - 11-20-2021

I am not of the opinion that "cleaning house" necessarily helps anything. It may, but only if you have identified what the problems are and also identified guys who you think can address them. Getting a bunch of new names that have no better clue than the last guys did just buys the coach some time because it injects uncertainty regarding who is actually responsible. See Mora at UCLA and Helton at USC. New guys, new systems, new emphasis, same (or worse) results. This team has lots of problems. What is needed are solutions. Shaw needs solutions. He need not tell us what these solutions are, but if they don't take effect, whatever they are, he will have to go. I expect he is fully aware of that.

Ironically the podium is empty for the first 6 minutes of the video, which seems appropriate.  If I were Shaw I probably wouldn't want to come out to say anything.

Some interesting tidbits:

On one hand, he apologized for being "too aggressive" on those goal line calls.  (That's not the issue, coach! The issue is that those were pretty terrible play calls.)

OTOH he put it on himself for putting the team in a position to succeed, and for them not being able to convert.  (Seems like he's going out of his way not to throw the players under the bus.)

McGill took ownership for losing leverage on the big pass to #80.

McKee said they need to "practice angry."

Has any reporter had the guts to just ask, "Stanford football seems to be on a downward trajectory. Would you agree? And if so, what are the reasons, and what do you plan to do to fix them?" Or something at least close to being critical. Do they honestly think anyone is interested in nothing more than a rehash of the game when it was a blowout like that?

Maybe someone has asked it, but we'd never know from the totally incompetent microphone management at these pressers.  I'd say at least half of the questions are inaudible in the video.  You'd think that large endowment could spare a couple of extra live mics in our own room....

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - Canalejas - 11-20-2021

Another vote for firing Muir first. We can blame it on losing the Directors’ Cup, if necessary.

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - akiddoc - 11-20-2021

Reasons to fire Muir:

Lost the Director's Cup.
Agreed to pay Shaw a ridiculous salary. Stanford shouldn't pay anyone that kind of money, especially the football coach.
Cut 11 sports, then had to humiliate himself and the AD and backtrack.
Apparently serves at the pleasure of the football coach and not vice versa.

You speak the truth. Ther Admin should kick them both out, but won't, not least because MTL and PD don't give a hoot about football or basketball.

Sorry, he also spoke of missed tackles and many missed passes.  He took minimal personal responsibility for the dismal outcome.

Shaw's "press conference" was one of the ABSOLUTE WORST I've ever seen. He made a few comments, took two questions, and then summarily left!!! The word bush comes to mind!

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - Phogge - 11-21-2021

The last few years have not been kind to Stanford athletics.

The public in the Bay Area could care less about the Olympic sports on the college level.

The public in the Bay Area could care less about college sports.

The national public doesn’t know that the Ted Cup exists.

The cheating scandal didn’t help. Cutting 11 sports in the way it was done really didn’t help.

Don’t know about the Merc’s circulation but the most important paper in the Bay Area pulled its beat reporters off Cal and Stanford and has always been a Cal paper anyway (since Bill Leiser died).

So to most sports fans around here Stanford is page 8.

It took a once in a lifetime bundle of energy to make it work at Stanford and it’s not going to happen again. Credit to Shaw for hanging on to Harballs magic for a few years.

Kids who think that they can play in the NFL watch TV and see full houses all Saturday long in Norman, Athens and Salt Lake. I would never have any visits to Stanford for a home football game.

Jonathan Smith is doing a great job in Corvallis but he couldn’t get the same kind of players he has admitted to Stanford. Troy Taylor could attract QB’s and WR’s with his offense but could they get in? If you got lucky and the next guy was successful he would be quickly poached.

Stanford can’t drop football because it would cause havoc in the PAC 12 and affect your Ted Cup sports.

IMO it boils down to one choice. Keep Shaw as CEO and force him to pick coordinators.

There is only one Jim Harbaugh and he’s not coming back.

I think Stanford football is screwed.

If you watched carefully, Tanner said that he called the QB sneak.  It was part of a package, and Tanner said the clock was running down and there was pressure to get a play off.  Shaw is responsible overall, but that was not a Shaw call per se.

It was embarrassing.  After heaping praise on Wilcox and the mediocre Cal team, he proffered the usual platitudes about execution, about having opportunities, but not capitalizing on them, etc.  Press conferences are generally a waste of time, but this one was a caricature of the worst such a media event has to offer.
