EJ Smith out for Washington -
PVTree - 09-20-2022
Smith is going to miss the Washington game. Who's going to get the carries? Filkins? Go with 60 passes?

Yes and Yes

I was tempted to post early on that the main problem with the transfers is that, while Smith shows great promise as a rb, he thus far has not been totally durable. I hope I'm wrong.

No surprise here. The loss of Jones/Peat looms large. Shaw is building his excuse resume.

Dawgs by 15, latest spread. Something tells me that...They. Will. Cover.
The preview of this game reminds me of the old dog-sled joke. Butt ugly.

I actually think Filkins shows flashes of being a special running back some day. Brenden Barrow has a little kick to him too. Honestly, I'd much rather see a healthy/hungry younger guy play than watch EJ run out of bounds to avoid contact like he did last time out. Put it this way, I think the outcome of the game would be the same with or without EJ playing. You could put McCaffery back there, and I doubt it would be enough. :( Hope I'm wrong.

I'm far less worries about who's playing RB than I am about whether we can play D like we did in the second half of last game or if we'll see more like the first half. And whether we can at least stay even on turnover margin

I have a bad feeling about this one, and I don't think Smith would impact the outcome much either way. Bad matchup, on the road in a loud, tough venue, facing a team on the rise.
Before the season I debated with a friend whether Stanford could get to 5 or 6 wins this year. I predicted 2-3 but conceded that if it could find a way to win a few shootouts against middle-of-the-Pac foes, such as UW, then maybe he'd be right. I don't see that happening any time soon, much less against the Huskies this weekend.

And again we have the transfer nightmare. If SC loses Jones for any reason and Dye goes pro they have their freshman phenom AND they probably will bring in a couple of top RB’s in the spring. Stanford can’t and won’t.

Yikes. So with the new mesh rpo, the defense will key on Tanner, and crush him. . . .Damn, and I went on record that'd we'd be close. Might just have to rethink that with new info. . .
Bummer for the Smith family, no doubt.

You are probably right. We had McCaffrey in 2016 and look what happened.
Both Smith and Filkins' durability was questionable going into the season based on what happened last year. I had hoped, however, that it would be a little bit longer before they started going down.
P.S. The Seattle papers are saying the Husky QB is starting to get some H-man hype based on his performance against MSU. Hopefully it doesn't take a big step up based on his performance against us.

Jimmy Lake was so bad, perhaps the worst Pac coach this century.

Am I missing something? How does this tie to a thread about EJ Smith and his injury?
He's not our new strength and conditioning coach, is he?

FYI we have 4-5 S & C coaches not one

Jimmy Lake not being Husky head coach and E.J. being injured both affect our chances of pulling an upset in Seattle.
Jimmy was a pretty decent defensive coach for the Huskies. At least he never had much problem stopping the Wazzu offense, which gave us fits.

In light of this news, I've had to amend my prediction to reduce the anticipated margin of victory :(

I'll take quality over quantity, thank you.

I'll be interested to see how Filkens does. Can he stay in the game with 10-15 carries or will he be crushed and have to sit? Based on what little I've seen of him, he's faster, more elusive, and has more burst than Smith. Is he a better pass receiver? I don't know.

Another skill required by Stanford RBs - blitz pick-up. Austin Jones was pretty good at it. I did not pay much enough during the USC game to see how Smith and/or Filkins did.

At this point, I'll gladly take 2016...
