Elon Musk: Peacetime vs. wartime leaders - cctop - 11-16-2022

I saw this article on peacetime vs wartime leaders in the context of today's email to Twitter employees from Elon Musk that they must commit to working "long hours at high intensity" or leave the company:

https://www.aei.org/articles/peacetime-vs-wartime-ceo-a-useful-lens-for-transformative-leaders/

Here's the link to Ben Horowitz's original blog post that the article references:

https://future.com/peacetime-ceo-wartime-ceo/

I would say that Stanford football has an excellent case study recently of a wartime leader vs. a peacetime leader.

If Musk is a wartime leader, it's in the sense that he seems to be doing a lot of stimulants to stay awake and alert.

He also seems to be losing his war.

What does Musk have to do with war?

From what I've seen of his Twitter antics, I would suppose that he knows more about war than he does about trying to transform an established, brobdingnagian social medium into a startup. Which is exactly what he's trying to do. Ain't gonna happen.

Silly question. What does Musk have to do with a Stanford sports board? Didn't we have a similar thread recently that went sideways until it was shut down?

I buried the lede there.

On this board we've discussed at length the distinction between a leader who can transform an organization and one who can run a steady ship -- and how it's rare it is for a leader to be successful at both.

It makes sense that venture capitalists would have spent a lot of time thinking about the same thing.

I simply thought the blog post by Ben Horowitz was interesting and relevant to the the last decade of Stanford football.

Is there any chance that Muir would issue an ultimatum that says that "to succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore" and that "Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade."

Sounds a bit like the line from The Caine Mutiny

Quote:Aboard my ship, excellent performance is standard, standard performance is sub-standard, and sub-standard performance is not permitted to exist - that, I warn you.

--Lt. Commander Philip Francis Queeg

I'd post a spoiler warning, but there's a reason the film is titled "The Caine Mutiny"

I have read Elon Musk's biography by Ashlee Vance.  This ethos Musk is imposing on Twitter is completely consistent with how he has run things at Tesla and (especially) SpaceX.  When those companies were getting going, workweeks upward of 100 hours for their engineers were not uncommon.  Perhaps this is excessive but when you're endeavoring unprecedented feats in the physical world, extraordinary efforts are warranted and Musk has proven his values there.

Trying to transfer that routine to an enterprise that depends on speculative theories about the habits inherent in large-scale human behavior, concerning a mass communication technology that hasn't even been around for a generation, now that's another story.

Elon Musk is another reason why all workers need unions.

Tom Hagen was a terrible wartime consigliere.

So I see stable genius Elmo has apparently already reached the stage of paranoia where he locks out his employees because he's afraid they will revolt against him.

Doubt we'd ever see an equivalent move from David Shaw.

Not sure I understand this.  These are highly paid people.  If they don't like Musk, they should quit and get another job.  If he doesn't like them, he should terminate them.

The only thing shocking here is that employees thought they could publicly criticize the vision laid out by their new CEO & Owner and keep their jobs.

Elon doesn't know what he's doing. He also has lied about his "Physics" degree from Penn and lied about being in a Stanford program as well. He's a huckster, a confidence man. He didn't found or create Tesla, though he likes to take credit.

Elon tried to "get tough" and then most twitter employees decided to resign, including the ones who are in charge of turning off access to people who no longer work at twitter. He fucked up and is pissing 44 billion away but YOLO I guess.

I thought the same thing about Tesla.  Their first plant was a total mess.  The decision to even build cars in CA is insane.  What most people don't realize is about half of the Tesla's were built in a tent beside the main plant because the super modern automated plant didn't work and all of sudden they needed twice the space.  He had all sorts of senior people quit that company as well.

But he figured it out.

When the CA plant couldn't produce, Elon was sleeping on the factory floor.  I remember telling everyone how insane that was.  What does Elon know about making cars.  What they needed was a dozen Ford engineers not Elon.

But he figured it out.

Not sure what is happening at Twitter.  But I wouldn't bet against him figuring it out.

RE: Elon Musk: Peacetime vs. wartime leaders - TheWildJacko - 11-18-2022

Um…did he figure it out though? Tesla cars are repeatedly catching on fire and exploding, killing people in the process. The self-driving system also has a history of crashing and killing/injuring people. They’re currently under federal investigation because of it. Oh and also Tesla factory workers recently filed cases with the Department of Labor alleging multiple workplace violations (wage theft, workplace injuries, fraudulent OSHA training certificates for training that never happened, among other complaints). So, what exactly did Elon Musk figure out?
