Against Utah, Stanford faced one of its former players in Gabe Reid. This weekend, Houston Heimuli returns to the Farm. When he joined the Stanford football program, Houston was hyped as a true power runner who had both speed and bulk to punish opposing defenses. But oddly, his most memorable plays at Stanford were as a receiver, and his only TD as a Cardinal came on a 1 yard pass reception in the 2018 season. Otherwise, he never quite achieved the expected breakthrough as a power running back. At BYU, his 2022 season has been even more modest: though he is listed as a fullback on the roster, he has seen most action on defense and has only a single tackle chalked up to his credit in the stats.

But Houston DID graduate from Stanford and probably transferred to be closer to his family and to play for his dad's old team (Lakei Heimuli played fullback for BYU's 1984 national championship team and then played a season for the Chicago Bears in 1987). The transfer to BYU, however, did not open up new vistas for Houston's collegiate football career, and he will probably be looking for a normal day job after the 2022 football season.

He was recruited as a fullback. And played fullback.

BYU's offensive system does not use a fullback. He has played no defense. His tackle was on special teams.

Fullbacks also catch passes. He caught several, and one of them was for a TD.

Yes, it was a special teams play, but it is listed under defensive stats (i.e., a tackle). He has seen action in most of BYU's games this year, but only on special teams, and there's that one tackle to his credit. Still, he is listed in the roster as a FB. Go figure.

The most meaningless, unanticipated, and ignorable football game Stanford has prepared for in a long long time. I don't expect to see that "mid-season" "snake in the grass" crisp execution promised by Shaw.

Actual butts in seats? I'd guess lower, regardless of whatever is reported. Maybe 10K, but that would be mostly BYU fans. It's a meaningless game, in the cold, at a late start time that turns off older people (like my dad) and people coming from further away. Our team's motivation level figures to be at an all-time low. Another beating is likely.

The only reason to attend? Appreciation for the seniors. We have some 4th- and 5th-year guys that put in a ton of work and deserved better outcomes. Unfortunately, many of them aren't healthy enough to play.

As for me, I'll be there anyway, mostly out of habit. (And because I have the season tix and live nearby.)

I chuckled when I read an article about his transfer way before the season. It said the same thing - that Heimuli, a fullback, wanted to "get more snaps" in an offensive system that DOESN'T USE FULLBACKS.

As an independent, they have some choice of bowl games, including the Frisco Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, LendingTree Bowl, Myrtle Beach Bowl, Armed Forces Bowl, and Birmingham Bowl.

They usually travel well. Back when they played in SCU's basketball league, their attendance dwarfed SCU's tradition rival St. Mary's. Only Gonzaga had more attendance. And some of those fans found the Stanford Band's treatment of LDS to be a bit rude.
