Tyrell Terry - DenverCard - 12-16-2022

Not long ago I was wondering what had become of Tyrell Terry, as I believe he would have been a senior if he had remained at Stanford.  Per the attached article about his struggle with anxiety, I can't help but think that had he stayed longer, and especially until graduation, he would have been vastly better able to handle the stress of trying to make it in the NBA.  I know that I matured greatly during college, a situation that called for greater psychological demands amidst the provision of support that allowed me to handle them.

RE: Tyrell Terry - 81alum - 12-16-2022

What is his status as a Stanford student?  Could he come back and finish his degree if he wanted to do so?

RE: Tyrell Terry - BostonCard - 12-16-2022

Alternatively, a kid with anxiety trying to balance academics and athletics at Stanford might have really struggled.  Hard to know in advance.  I hope he figures things out.

Yes but he has to pay for it. This was a point of contention a year or 2 ago for him and the source of a couple cryptic tweets.

RE: Tyrell Terry - Phogge - 12-16-2022

Stanford needs about eight Arthur Lee's and one to coach.

I guess I'm out of step because I don't understand the "contention."

Isn't it "you go pro, you lose your scholie"?  Or was he on an academic scholarship?  Maybe some kind of hybrid arrangement?

I presume you forfeit your scholarship when you go pro.  But universities have a vested interest in seeing pro athletes come back and finish, to improve their graduation rates, so I believe some keep the door open.   Usually pro athletes can more than afford it.

If you go pro after 2+ years, you keep your scholarship.

Terry was a one-and-done and thus did not. (Nor did Ziaire Williams, for that matter, but he's making way more money.)

Yeah, I remember those tweets.  I think if he wants to come back, we should find a way to enable it, but that ship may well have sailed.

RE: Tyrell Terry - TrumpCard - 12-16-2022

I feel bad that he's suffered mental health problems and that they contributed to derailing his career.  I hope his next steps lead him in a better direction.

As for the issue of the scholarship.  He stayed in college long enough to drink a cup of coffee and then made 3+ mil playing in the NBA.  When Stanford merely enforced its pre-existing policy that it doesn't keep scholarships open for players who're less than 50% done with college, he bad mouthed the school publicly.  No hard feelings; he was probably going through hard times emotionally.  But he can afford to pay for school if he wants to graduate from Stanford, and I think Stanford made the right call to say no on the scholarship revival.

That was my reaction too.

Just Stanford plus life, while struggling with anxiety, can be overwhelming.

From the article, he says he didn't have these issues while at Stanford (though hard to say what would have happened if he stayed as it sounds like the pandemic isolation made things a lot worse for him).

Quote:Terry’s leaving his career options open, as many college kids do. He wants to learn what his passions are. He’ll definitely use the time on campus to reconnect with old friends—some on the basketball team, some not. He’ll soak in the day-to-day. He might try club soccer.

“Going back to Stanford University,” he says, “isn’t too bad of a Plan B, you know?”
Glad he is getting it sorted out.

That's a really good article.

Very good article. Thanks for posting, 82.

RE: Tyrell Terry - ca245 - 01-25-2023

Good for him.
Does his old scholarship still apply, or does he have to pay his own way. (I vaguely recall that, in another thread about another ex-Stanford MBB player, someone posted that you had to have played for Stanford a minimum number of years in order for your scholarship to be honored if you come back to finish your degree.)

RE: Tyrell Terry - CompSci87 - 01-25-2023

Pretty sure he will have to pay. IIRC, I read that you have to play at least 2(?) years for your scholarship to be honored when you return. A while ago there were stories about a tweet which seemed to mean Terry resented that. Good to hear now he wants to return anyway.

Re-upping this for those asking if he has to pay his own way.

Terry was paid $3.3 million by the Mavericks for his short time there. No doubt, his bottom line was less after taxes and expenses associated with training as an unsigned player.  But 3 years at Stanford is well under 10% of what Terry made as a player.

I have a ton of sympathy for Tyrell's mental health and career situation.  But financially--we should all be so lucky.
