Indiana - Iowa Game - treetop11 - 02-26-2023

I haven't seen Indiana before so wanted to watch this game today. Saw most of it including the dramatic ending. Game went back and forth in lead in the last couple of minutes. With the game tied, an Indy player was fouled with 1.5 seconds left in the game. She buried both free throws to put Indiana ahead by 2 and looking like a sure winner. Iowa to a TO and advance the ball. The ball was inbounded to Caitlin Clark who took a dribble and made a three on a contested off balance shot. Iowa won by one on the buzzer beater.

Clark clearly has to be the favorite for POY. I was rooting for Iowa because I wanted to see Indiana get another loss. Their loss is beneficial for us. Last reveal had SC, Indiana, Us, and Utah. SC is untouchable for now. Indiana losing shows that those in top 4 can lose to quality teams at this stage, and we lost to Utah the other current #1 seed. UConn's loss to St. Johns keeps them at bay, and so only LSu remains a threat to to our #1 seed. But it's clear that most discount LSU base don their soft schedule. The conference tournament outcomes will be the final word as to who gets #1 seeds, but Indiana's loss today gives us some cushion.

A great game, contested all the way. I watched the last 1.5 seconds several times, still amazed at how it came out. But it's clear that it was a really well-designed play -- Clark starting on the far side of the court from the inbounder, making it difficult for the defense to set up, then Clark moving halfway around the court into place for her shot with screens set for her to move, and only when she's in place does the ball get passed into bounds and the clock start -- making possible for her to catch, make one dribble, and then take the shot with only 1.5 seconds on the clock.

I looked at the play. She did not take a dribble. In fact, I think she traveled.

Some may say this is an overly harsh take or nitpicking, but I thought it was pretty obvious at the time that the IU player should've missed the second free throw. The difference between being up one or two points at that stage is marginal as the ensuing Iowa attempt was always more likely to be a three. However, the difference between 1.5 seconds on the clock and the half-second or more that it would've taken the Iowa rebounder to collect the ball and call TO was massive. Clark may still have gotten her buzzer beater off in time but it would've been a lot more difficult.

Not nitpicking. I had the same thought as I watched. Worst case, valuable time ticks off. Best case, especially if she puts up a shot with some extra pace on it, Indiana gets the rebound.

The Indiana Mens team can avenge the Womens team loss on Tuesday at Assembly Hall.  For what it's worth, Mike Woodson filed a formal complaint against Iowa coach Fran McCaffery after Iowa's win earlier this season.  Those two just don't get along.

There was a little back and forth, but in the last 4 and a half minutes it was more Indiana going on a 13-8 run (until the last second). With 49 seconds to go and Iowa still leading by 2, these were the plays:
1) Caitlin Clark commits shooting foul - Indiana free throws made and game now tied
2) Clark gives up on a shot and instead passes to Monika Czinano, who misses a layup and fails to get the rebound
3) Czinano commits a shooting foul - free throws made and Indiana now with a 2 point lead (1.5 seconds left)
4) before the inbound Czinano commits an illegal screen
5) Clark travels after receiving the inbound pass
6) Clark uses the extra space to throw up a 3, which the refs count despite 4 and 5, and the media declares Clark the best basketball player in the country (which she may be but not due to her performance at the end of this game)

Unfortunately as we all know too well (and especially after the inconsistent reffing this past weekend in CO and UT), it's only a foul (travel) if called, and if the refs/media want or don't want it, that seems to have an outsized influence. I maintain that if someone - ANYONE - defends Clark well, Iowa will be unable to win as Cinzano is overhyped. At least Indiana has three really strong players - including Berger, Holmes and Parrish (whom we've seen shoot lights-out when she was at OR).

Still hoping Stanford keeps our #1 seed though if we're 2, 3, 6 or 7 overall that should be similar bracket-wise to avoid the SC side -- and with the right attitude we can beat IN and LSU. Of course, since I have tickets to Seattle, I REALLY would like them to play there!

Apparently I was wrong about Iowa's win helping us as we dropped to 6th in AP rankings and 6th in ESPN power rankings. I'm surprised that we got discounted so much for a close loss under tough conditions to a team that was projected like us as a #1 seed.

In fact, the loss wasn't that close. We were down by 82-73 with 27 seconds to go, until Betts and Demeter scored to make it look fairly close.
