RE: Haley Jones to the Atlanta Dream - chimera - 04-10-2023

Congrats to her.

RE: Haley Jones to the Atlanta Dream - 81alum - 04-10-2023

She did better than I expected, actually, beating out Laeticia Amihere and Jordan Horston, for example.  But she did not come in at the #2 pick as some expected a year or two ago.  Still, being the #6 pick is nothing to sneeze at, and she will have the opportunity to show that she can diversify her game and do well at the next level.  Of particular note is that she was Atlanta's first pick, and two picks later Atlanta then picked up Amihere.

Congrats to Ashten!  Whether she makes the Connecticut Sun or not, this will raise her profile for playing overseas.

Congrats to Haley! She went higher than I was personally expecting. Was Tara there? I saw Geno, Dawn, Kim Mulkey, Indiana coach, along with several others who had players drafted. Draft was in NYC.

Meanwhile #1 Aliyah Boston will be Lexie Hull’s teammate with Indiana.

RE: Haley Jones to the Atlanta Dream - chimera - 04-10-2023

Cool that Ashten got drafted.  Congrats!

Lexie was also drafted 6th, iirc.

With so many high draft picks in Indiana,  it might be tough for her to keep a roster spot.   Hopefully she comes out firing on all cylinders this year.

Funny story about Haley today.  Her new coach had to go on Twitter to remind her to answer her phone.

I also found it interesting no Coach.

Congrats Haley!

One thing that I thought she would develop after her 2021 MOP with 2021 national champion
Stanford was a consistent 3-point shot.  Alas!  it did not happen and even deteriorated
which, on hindsight, became a great liability for Stanford this season
and caused her to drop from #2 to #6 in the WNBA draft.

She really needs to develop that 3-point shot for her to make noise in the WNBA.

Many of us here have been saying that since last summer.  It was obvious she needed it and the team need it.  I actually thought it was perhaps the most important improvement any of the players could make.  Whole different offense if she had that shot and teams had to guard her out there.  Alas...  Maybe now that she is a WNBA player she can work on it more.

The question is this: did Haley try to work on acquiring a good 3-point shot and fail, or did she not try to work on it? If the latter, did she think she didn't need such a shot, or wasn't she told by the coaches that she definitely needed develop that shot? If the former, why would she think that? If the latter, that would be incredibly negligent of our coaches. Curious minds want to know what happened in this matter, on that had a major effect on Stanford's lackluster O against good Ds. Got to have a good outside shot to prevent the D from clogging the paint against your drives to the hoop. With a good outside shot, the defender must take it seriously thereby opening better lanes to the hoop. Conversely, Curry became great when he learned to take it the hoop and finish or dish as a complement to his lethal outside shot.

RE: Haley Jones to the Atlanta Dream - Card10Fan - 04-11-2023

I remember reading an article from last summer. The topic was the off-season and Haley was quoted in the article stating her ball handling and her perimeter shooting were her primary areas of focus and improvement last off-season. She also has her own personal player development coach. There is no way perimeter shooting hasn’t been preached by her private coach and the Stanford coaches. I feel like she just hasn’t put in the time to really work on it. If she had, there would be some noticeable improvement in 4 years.

I hope she makes the Dream roster and has success. I’m skeptical how her game translates.  Unless the consistent perimeter shooting develops quickly though, I think she’s gonna have a really really hard time against the athletes in the W.

RE: Haley Jones to the Atlanta Dream - BobK - 04-11-2023

In the San Jose Mercury recently on Haley and her lack of three ability it was written than in HS she made 89 threes at 38%.
Yes a mystery

RE: Haley Jones to the Atlanta Dream - oldalum - 04-11-2023

Her 15-foot jumper has a flat arc; that has to change to shoot 3-pointers at a higher percentage. Compare her medium-range jumper to Brink's, who despite her height shoots more of a rainbow jumper even from shorter range.

Nice article in the Athletic on her draft night.
