Overseeing the demise of the greatest athletic program in collegiate sports history. Did nothing to stem the demise of the Conference of Champions.
High time for a movement to rid ourselves of this incompetence. . . .

The conference AD’s were not the decision-makers. The guilty parties in the mess are the chancellors/presidents. They enabled Scott/Kliavkoff to make the decisions that brought down the conference.

The commish does the will of the 12 university presidents, who are assumed to be advised by their athletic directors. It's a tough job, but maybe the commish should have been more decisive and not overplayed his hand when other conferences were sitting there with bigger stacks and assuredly larger ambitions.

The real reason to fire Muir is it’s not clear there is any athletic program left to be managed

In retrospect, the appointment of Kliavkoff to replace Scott was hardly the remedy it was cracked up to be when it was announced (credited with a total of just more than $1.8 million for a period beginning July 1, 2021, including
$1.75 million in base salary, that's a little over $3.6 million). He came from the gaming and entertainment sector, a neophyte when it came to college sports conferences and the political dynamics/history of all the moving parts. Not to mention the quirks, egos and blind-spots of university presidents, some of whom still know nothing about the rough-and-tumble of the territory. Point is, the horses were already out of the barn when he signed on. Gotta think he's making some frantic SOS outreaches at this moment to his former industry. If ever there was a stranger in a strange land, it's this guy. Not unlike the Matt Damon character in The Martian. That he was even considered reveals all you need to know about his lost-in-space betters in the left-coast Ivory Towers. I suspect that USC moneybags were plotting their move not long after they were frog-marched out of Levi's Stadium in December 2015. Yes, THAT long ago. That had to sting.

You mean THIS game? Hard to believe that loss led to them moving to the conference of Michigan, Ohio State, and Nebraska.

(And, wow, doesn't that game with McCaffery running wild over a very good USC defense and Stanford headed toward a Rose Bowl rout over Big 10 champion Iowa, seem like weird multi-verse update from long, long ago and far, far away.)

We once again can say we’re not Nebraska.

Whomever the AD is over the next 3-5 years will likely oversee the dismantling of Stanford's varsity athletic program. A reduced media payment will mean big time cuts to the budget which will mean axing sports - lots of them.
As a point of comparison against another school that has a football team, UC Davis sponsors 9 men's and 15 women's sports. Fresno State sponsors 6 men's and 11 women's sports.
UC Irvine (without a football team) sponsor's 9 men's and 9 women's sports.
Stanford currently sponsors 16 men's and 20 women's sports. A number of those will have to go.
Who is going to want to have the AD job that basically amounts to slashing the workforce and reorganizing into a much smaller company after chapter 11? This is just so sad.

This is an entirely plausible, perhaps even likely, outcome but it doesn’t have to be this way. Stanford has far more well heeled alums than those other institutions who are fully capable of bankrolling all of the Olympic sports. The question is will they have the appetite to do so.

I really hope something is in the works. At the moment I’ve seen silence out of both Stanford and Cal. Basically zero rumors.

Yes, the most frustrating part of all this is it has looked like we have been sitting on our hands the whole time.
At least now we should be able to see some indication of how seriously the university views this issue.

What percent of the athletes come to Stanford to play in the Pac-12? Many, particularly in football and basketball, but not most in other sports. Many sports do not compete in the Pac-12 anyway.

Muir has been AD for 11 years. What is the average term of an AD?
RE: Fire Muir! -

Yup ... All the high fan-interest sports are PAC 12. Or were. The only one I regularly attend that isn't PAC is Men's Volleyball. I have to think competing in the Pac12 and against the best athletes in the West Coast (and often the US) was a brobdingnagian draw for recruits in those sports.
"Come to Stanford and play against Cal Poly and Davis!", doesn't have the same appeal, does it?
Sorry, I'm normally a pretty upbeat person but I'm feeling very depressed about Stanford sports this week.
