Interesting choice given her recent challenges with freedom of speech and student behavior at the Law School.

Also the sequence of the hiring is questionable. Pick the President and then get a Provost that complements the President's skills. There was a mismatch with MTL/Drell that burned Stanford.  I guess Stanford could not wait for the selection of a new President given the disarray in senior leadership right now.

RE: meet the new provost - Canalejas - 08-23-2023

Congratulations to her!

RE: meet the new provost - terry - 08-23-2023

Jenny Martinez has very good credentials in the legal field. She must have administrative experience in her role as Dean of the Law School. So she looks like a reasonable hire as Provost.

I wonder how Martinez feels about college sports. I believe the Athletic Director reports to the Provost, so she will have a significant role in the sports program.

Does anyone know her?

It's interesting the Stanford's incoming interim President, Richard Saller, announced this hire even though he doesn't officially assume the presidency until Sept 1. And it's interesting that the press release refers to Saller as incoming President, not incoming interim President. Apparently Saller is already acting as the President. I wonder whether that means he is taking the lead on Stanford's conference alignment issue.

Excellent questions Terry.

RE: meet the new provost - M T - 08-23-2023

While the questions are worth asking, consider the alternative, that MTL announced this.  What would this board have made of that.  Whatever the new provost's qualifications, there would be those that, if she doesn't control the AD as they want, would talk about her as appointed by a lame duck president.

I think it makes perfect sense for the incoming (interim) president to announce the selection, as a show of support.

As for "interim", I rather doubt Stanford has had time to do all the checking it might do on potential candidates and to make a selection.  I rather doubt Stanford would tip its hand by simply dropping "interim" in a press release.

Saller's field of expertise, Ancient History, fits nicely with our Athletic Department. He's an expert on the Fall of Rome, as well. . . .

As for Martinez, I too am puzzled in light of the recent fiasco at the Law School. Sure, she penned a nice response after the fact, but the fiasco happened on her watch. Time will tell.

Athletics is one of the 29(!) departments and missions under the Provost. It's a h.u.g.e. job. Athletics and its $150M budget is kind of a blip when you realize that Martinez will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of an $8-9B organization. It will be a big step up for her and she will have to learn what issues she can delegate vs. those she needs to be more involved in. She will likely defer to her experienced AD for now on matters related to athletics.

from the article

Quote:Prior to her appointment as SLS dean, she served as associate dean for curriculum from 2013 to 2016.

I believe you are correct that the AD reports to the provost.

I also found it interesting that the appointed a provost before a new president, hope they get along....

Some googling didn't lead me to anything indicating one way or the other that she has any interest in sports.

What should she have done? Personally muzzle the students?

The continuing complaints here about that incident are so transparently tendentious that it's sad.

There are actual threats to free speech being enacted in schools all over the country today, but you people are fixated on a single incident involving a few students with no power whatsoever.

Hypocritical whiners need to get over it already.

Hypocritical whiner. Wow. I've not been called that before.

The incident at the Law School brought a ton of negative press to University at a time when the University was waist deep in bad press.

"A few students with no power whatsoever" you claim. If my memory is correct, there was an Associate Dean of the Law School involved as well. Perhaps even as the main instigator. That IS the responsibility of the Dean, as is the culture that enabled the incident to occur.

I said time will tell, and I'll give the new Provost a shot.

There’s a reason why they say that athletics are the front porch to a university.

Maybe a version of Murphy’s law.. if you fail to lead during a difficult time, you get promoted to one further level beyond your competence.  In her defense, i was impressed with the statement  She wrote on free speech after the law school fiasco. i just wish she had take. Some action that would lead me to believe she believed in what she wrote.

My guess: Prof. Martinez wanted the appointment to start at the beginning of the academic year.  It may also be true that the Trustees have pretty much settled on Sailer.  We will see.

Tirien Steinbach did "resign" last month, of course there's fine line between resigned and get offered a buyout to "go away" and not have fired show up in your work history or have your termination litigated (which might, or might not, have been a consideration in one other high level, soon to be recent departure)
