Athletics is one of the 29(!) departments and missions under the Provost. It's a h.u.g.e. job. Athletics and its $150M budget is kind of a blip when you realize that Martinez will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of an $8-9B organization. It will be a big step up for her and she will have to learn what issues she can delegate vs. those she needs to be more involved in. She will likely defer to her experienced AD for now on matters related to athletics.

The incident at the Law School brought a ton of negative press to University at a time when the University was waist deep in bad press.
"A few students with no power whatsoever" you claim. If my memory is correct, there was an Associate Dean of the Law School involved as well. Perhaps even as the main instigator. That IS the responsibility of the Dean, as is the culture that enabled the incident to occur.
I said time will tell, and I'll give the new Provost a shot.
