Not a big story, but Fisher Anderson said out loud what most of us here believe. Hope the team keeps building step by step for the rest of the season.

He's welcome to his opinion but it is also undeniable that Colorado is a much better team than they were last year. Which of these two teams has a brighter future? I would say Colorado, hands down.

I would say Stanford, heads up. You can't build a solid team on idolatry, braggadocio, swagger, and "I just wanna win! Lose and you're outta here."

A "solid" team, no you can't. A winning team, yes you can, at least for a while. Prime Time has the same loyalty to Colorado as he did to the players he ran off. He will do well for maybe two/three years. Then "something" will happen and he will leave, one way or another. Could be the NFL, could be someplace like A&M who will pay him a lot, or it could be something regarding his or his players conduct. All equally probable. The mess that he will leave behind might take some sorting out. He isn't in it for the "long haul".

This is a clickbait headline that doesn't really warrant a reply.
However, I will note that Lincoln Riley ran players off his team when he was hired at USC and recruited transfers like he was Goldman Sachs going after top MBAs. Yet I have not heard his program characterized as "mercenary."
Looking ahead, who would be the most aggressive team in the ACC with regard to transfers?

Shaw was here for 12 years, and the Sheriff was here for 7 years. The other five coaches since 1989 averaged three years each (Green, Walsh II, Teevens, Harris, Harbaugh). Hopefully we get a long-termer...

Should we pre-call them mercenaries or wait until they are actually on the schedule?

By overall rating, maybe, but not by volume. When I think "most aggressive," I think number of transfers in/out, a la Colorado.
By volume, It's
Louisville no contest. They took 27, the fourth most in the country and most in the ACC by a mile, to Miami/FSU's mid-teens.
I have absolutely heard USC under Riley characterized as "mercenary." Almost all the teams in the Pac-12 are. The most transfers per capita of all P5 conferences, even factoring in Stanford. When you don't, and even if you don't factor in Colorado either to get rid of both outliers, it's still not close.

USC has always been mercenaries, and always paid players, legal or not.
NIL and the transfer portal will ensure USC never misses the CFP ever again when it expands to 12, barring some sort of team implosion. Makes me want to puke, but that's the reality.
I guess they had to pay Caleb Williams too much to afford a defense this year, but I don't expect this trend to continue.

You haven’t? I heard it a lot last year…with his 22 mercenaries. And it has come out of my mouth several times. Maybe it’s because you live in LA.

USC is indeed a mercenary team. I said that a year ago. They had almost as many transfers coming onto their football team as Stanford had in the whole university.

Yeah, but it isn't a real accusation unless it gets picked up for a clickbait headline by some media outlet or blogger looking for views. :-)

Wait Spiny ..... You've been reading the Cardboard practically since it's founding and HAVE NEVER HEARD USC CALLED "MERCENARY"? I don't think that's possible for a healthy person with two good eyes and your excellent mind. Please see a doctor for that rapid on-set amnesia!

The discussions that have centered around Coach Prime have made it clear that it would be inappropriate to draw a line in the sand between good and evil, and plunk him down on one side or the other. He is bearing out to be a complex, ambiguous, and polarizing figure. If I were to have a beef with his personage, it wouldn't really be anything about the demeanor of Deion himself. Rather it would be about the hanky-panky that goes on at the periphery of his program. I mean, the DJ who was mixing his hip-hop muck over the jumbotron while Stanford was in formation on offense, and had to get a warning from the ref?
And about the 70 or so former Buffalo players on scholarship who got run off and are now scattered around parts unknown -- before last Friday I would have had some pity and sympathy for them but they are all now a little bit less woebegone since they can turn their gaze back in the direction of Boulder, and snicker quietly to themselves about the wild rodeo of a game that Coach Prime inadvertently spared them.

I do. Alex Grinch is an awful, awful DC.

Sorry, Sam. IMO, the fact that the ousted players can "turn their gaze back in the direction of Boulder and snicker quietly" about the loss to Stanford doesn't even come close to making up for what was done to the "70 or so former Buffalo players on scholarship who got run off." They deserve sympathetic consideration and to be viewed as very unfortunate casualties of the new coach's utter lack of empathy and mania for immediately winning big. What was done sheds bright light on Deion Sanders' value priorities and non-existent sense of responsibility for the players who were recruited to and committed to play for the U. of Colorado. They were treated like disaposable commodities, as if they were players on a business-oriented, win-at-all costs, professional football league team. I certainly hope that Deion's mentality (along with Lincoln Riley's) is not the harbinger of what will happen and more and more universities over time.

BTW, ultimate CFB merc JT Daniels (before 2023, the path was SC->Georgia->W Va.) threw for 342 yards in a win Thursday night for noted football factory Rice, the epitome of what’s wrong with today’s athletic landscape. Rice ranks a lowly fifth among FBS schools in the federal grad rate for student-athletes!

The Covid year eligibility freebie finally runs out for everyone in 2 years (hence all the good teams are super old with guys who shouldn't even be in college), and you can now only transfer "for free" once without sitting a year. The waters will thus remain choppy for 2 years but afterwards should calm somewhat.

Interesting that JT almost came to Stanford.
