How on earth did neither Nix nor Penix win the award? What a joke. Again.

Gotta disagree. I thought Daniels had the best season of any player in the country. Quite frankly, I thought he was going to be aced out because his team didn’t make the playoffs. I was happy to see him get the trophy. He earned it.

I thought Daniels was really good at ASU, and he continued to improve. If Oregon had beaten Wash I think Nix would have won it. The SEC folks always consider him to be one of theirs.

Daniels was absolutely incredible and deserved it.

I'm not gonna say Daniels didn't deserve it, but having two Pac-12 finalists split West votes and given the South's propensity to purposefully leave West players off of their ballot entirely, the odds were against Penix and Nix.

Daniels literally has the highest passer rating ever recorded. It can be so embarrassing how blinkered regional partisans get. It’s silly to be scandalized by Daniels winning.

Passer rating, a thing coined like 40 years after the trophy's namesake died, of course not the only way to measure worthiness for the trophy. Toby was certainly dinged for his team not being a national title contender.
Not scandalized, he's a great and worthy player, but a bit of a shame how things always seem to tilt towards the south in CFB.

Of course it’s not the only way, but there are numerous ways to measure impact and several would view this as one of the greatest single seasons in history. At a minimum really freaking great. Certainly a lot better than Toby Gerhart.
Attention goes to the SEC because they have more fans and more passionate fans. It’s not bias as much as capitalism/democracy/will of the people. This creates self-reinforcing dynamics whereby the SEC gets more of the attention and more resources and I get why that’s frustrating to some fans from elsewhere. But I do think the arguments are not grounded in reality when, as has happened often the last two weeks, people try to question the claims to national preeminence of the top teams/players in the SEC. They’re really great.

Every time I watched Daniels play, I was really impressed. Seemed like the best player on the field to me every time, and against legit competition. The stats seem to confirm this.
I actually though Nix was better than Penix, but I thought Daniels was better than both. Just one man’s opinion.

And he led the nation in rushing yards/attempt (8.4)
Note: 120 minimum attempts

And then there’s Christian McCaffrey’s 2015!

Gerhart, Luck(x2), CMac, and Love. There does seem to be a pattern.

Somewhat ironically, I think future versions of those gentlemen will benefit from being in the ACC or whatever All-Colossal Conference results from the next negotiated viewing rights contract. At least Stanford will be playing games in the East, South and Midwest.

This guy's selection was among the most meritorious I can remember -- and I go back to Ernie Davis. It almost restores my respect for the award.

Probably not. Those weirdos out west will be resented stepchildren for a long time. Did we ever really accept Colorado?

Did we ever really accept ASU :-)?
IMO there is also a fair bit of what amounts to anti-Stanford bias. There is a general assumption that Stanford isn't really a "serious" football school and therefore if Stanford appears to have a real good player, it is marked with an asterisk. It just can't true, and JP winning was definitely a unicorn.
