I see this happening so much in collegiate athletics. Or is this just an isolated incident, where universities have to pay out coaches it fires?

Hmm, it feels like it's been forever since Tennessee had been to the Final Four.
2008, that was 15 seasons ago (not including the 2020 covid cancelled season).
That was their 8th and most recent national championship,
their 18th and most recent Final Four appearance.
Looking at their NCAA Tournament results since 2008:
Pat Summitt:
2009 - 1st Round
2010 - R16
2011 - Elite 8
2012 - Elite 8
Holly Warwick:
2013 - Elite 8
2014 - R16
2015 - Elite 8
2016 - Elite 8
2017 - 2nd Round
2018 - 2nd Round
2019 - 1st Round
Kelly Harper:
2021 - 2nd Round

2023 - R16
2024 - 2nd Round
