RE: WBB transfer in - Tess Heal - BosCard - 05-13-2024

Super excited by this.   Favorite part of the article was finding out that she was 8th in the country in free throws attempted last year.   We haven’t had a guard be that aggressive/skilled in driving/getting fouls in like forever.

RE: WBB transfer in - Tess Heal - OCcardinal - 05-13-2024

Away against Oregon this season Heal scored 21 points on 69% shooting with 8 assists (in 29 minutes).  Away against Oregon this season, Stanford's 3 starting guards combined had 21 points on 39% shooting with 9 assists (in 84 combined minutes).

Tess is quite the find. WCC Newcomer of the Year, All-WCC First Team, WCC All Freshman team, 12x WCC Freshman of the week (conference record). Had the fourth most points in a single season at SCU, on five other Bronco single season Top 10 record lists (minutes played, made field goals, made free throws). Shot 86% from free throw line.  She knows how to dish...had 5+ assists 13 times, scored in double figures in all but three games, averaged 4.3 rebounds per game, 17.6 ppg. Only downside to her game, to my knowledge, she's not great from the outside...27.3% from 3 pt. range.

She'll be a terrific Cardinal...

I think 27% was 2022. Improved to 35% in 2023 from the site I saw.

But yes, 3-pt shooting is where we need the most help.

RE: WBB transfer in - Tess Heal - 81alum - 05-13-2024

This is welcome news.  Suddenly Lepolo will have a couple of credible competitors, with Ijiwoye being the other.    Now let's hope that Peterson or Umeh can be really productive as freshmen, and then we would have a balanced team.

A lot of ifs, though.

RE: WBB transfer in - Tess Heal - BosCard - 05-13-2024

Heal is particularly important because of her ability to drive and finish at the rim.  We mostly have 3-point shooting bigs (Demetre, Agara, Peterson) and the best way to leverage that skill is to play 4 or 5 out like Utah did.  If your bigs are three point shooting threats then they will draw their defender out of the paint leaving open driving lanes for guards who can drive and score.  Lepolo can certainly drive but she was so hesitant to shoot that she would just circle and pull the ball back out.   Hopefully Heal will have a lot of room in the paint to operate with our bigs providing spacing.

interesting read on her transfer experience

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/college/article/tess-heal-beat-odds-rare-stanford-basketball-19462282.php

Quote:“It was a very difficult process,” Heal told the Chronicle. “It’s very long and arduous. The transfer process, I honestly would not recommend it. But once I did my Stanford visit, which was my last visit, I knew this was the place for me.”
...
“It was very nerve-wracking, the waiting,” Heal said. “I think their admissions process might be a little bit more involved than some other schools. But I worked hard for two years. I poured my heart and soul into the application. At the end of the day, all you can do is your best and then hope, and it panned out.”

"Lepolo can certainly drive..." You must have seen something I didn't.

RE: WBB transfer in - Tess Heal - fullmetal - 05-24-2024

Stanford almost recruited Heal.  The staff very much feels like they now have a second chance with Heal, and that's a great way to use the portal imo.

We do need championship-caliber guard play.
