It's the final in-season TreeCast of the Stanford sports season, and we catch up with Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir for a wide-ranging chat. Bernard shares what's still left to do before Stanford officially becomes an ACC member, how Stanford can evolve its approach while maintaining its University identity, the outlooks ahead for football & both hoops programs, and more.

The TreeCast with Troy Clardy: Bernard Muir One-on-One (June 19, 2024)
Apart from learning about the new facilities for several teams, I found nothing of real interest or insight in this interview. Muir's replies to the questions he was asked consisted primarily of cliches, expressions of thanks to his bosses, and vanilla optimism about Stanford in the ACC. (One useful nugget was that he predicted that football games against Notre Dame were likely to continue.) Too bad he wasn't asked some tough questions, such as "Who are the parties most to blame for the demise of the Pac-12?", "Did Stanford make a protracted and vigorous effort to preserve the Pac-12, even after USC and UCLA said they were leaving?" "What did you think of the way the women's basketball season ended?", and "Why did it take so long before you decided to replace Haase when he hadn't been to the Dance since he was hired?" I'm sure there are much better and more provocative questions Muir could have been asked but I suppose Troy can't ask them or else he'll risk losing access in the future. So, he steered free of controversy, limited himself to marshmallow questions, and, predictably, was given innocuous and uninformative answers.

I think Troy is employed by Stanford, which would explain everything.

I'd rate Stanford's influence over USC, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon as minimal. On the other hand, Stanford should be satisfied those institutions are no longer trying to steer its bus.

Can someone summarize who had a chance to listen. What are the new facility projects?!

Thanks for the laugh. He at least could have added in the questions "How could you let Katie Ledecky go to Florida? Have you seen her wearing a Gators cap at the Olympic trials? It's heresy!"

Actually, you still have a chance to listen...link to the show is in the original post and you can check it out anytime you want. We get to the facilities construction at about the 26-minute mark of the show, so you can hear for yourself. (and obviously you're more than welcome to listen to the whole interview!)

Have a good summer, everyone. Talk to you from Charlotte next month. Go Stanford.

MV's comment was scrupulously fair and merits far more than a dismissive, hand-waving "Thanks for listening."

I don’t think BC was dismissing those concerns. I think his point was, what kind of a person do you choose to be in expressing those concerns?
Look, Troy is a Stanford employee so he can ask questions within that framework. Yes, there are questions we’d like answered, and there are other venues that are more fitting. I have listened to many of Troy’s interviews and I’ve gotten good information from them.

I do wish more had been said on the softball and Tennis stadiums but I enjoyed other info
Both basketball teams will fly charter
I also believe WVB will also fly charter
Stadium info I know:
Softball: a second deck, locker rooms and I hope public bathrooms and concessions
Tennis: more courts, a roof? I did hear yes a roof, more underground like practice court locker rooms
Anyone know more on the two stadiums ?
Thank you Troy and Bernard

Thanks, Bob.
I saw a presentation on the tennis courts. Bob is right that a roof will be added (and a “waterproof” mesh type of walls) so that we can host games in any kind of weather, a prerequisite(?) for being selected as a site for post-season play of some caliber (i.e. no rainouts/delays). It looked very exciting!

Did he ask Bernard why Stanford athletics have declined under his reign and got crushed by Texas in the Directors' Cup this year?
RE: TreeCast w/Bernard Muir -
BobK - 06-23-2024
Actually it was close in the Cup and we all know we lost due to football and men’s basketball
We also win two national team championships
RE: TreeCast w/Bernard Muir -

I think that those who want some journalist to pin Muir down on various AD related topics will always be disappointed. Muir is a master at evasion. Troy could have asked every question from this thread and Muir would have batted them away. Muir is always going to put the best spin on whatever he can. And he will avoid topics that he does not want to discuss in public like the dissolution of the Pac 12, transfers, NIL, athlete employment, Varsity Blues and cutting sports.
Let's face it, Muir has a lot of good material to work with. Under his leadership (since the 2012-2013 season), Stanford has continued its streak of winning at least one NCAA championship a year. It has finished 1st or 2nd every year in the Director's Cup. It has won 33 national championships and ~130 conference championships in the last 12 years. Stanford has completed numerous projects to improve facilities and athlete health care, with more planned. Yes, football and basketball are at the bottom of their respective conferences. But Muir would speak optimistically of the energy that Coaches Taylor and Smith are building around their programs and the hope for future success on the field and the court. We've heard this all before. But I don't expect that we will hear anything different from Muir while he is at Stanford and perhaps beyond. It's not in his DNA.
