Men's Golf 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 09-19-2024
The men's golf team begins a new era starting tomorrow. That is, the post-Thorbjornsen, post-Vilips, post-Brown era. That core 3 made the NCAAs three times, but never advanced to the match play part of the championship. We'll see if the current group can improve on that record.
Stanford brought in the #1 recruiting class in the country in 2024-25.
TK Chantananuwat from Thailand. 55th ranked amateur in the world.
Logan Kim from Altadena, CA. 4th ranked recruit out of California.
Jay Leng from San Diego. #1 recruit from the state of California.
All 3 will be playing in the Fighting Illini Invitational Friday-Sunday along with sophomore Ethan Gao and Cal transfer Nathan Wang.
I usually don't pay much attention to fall golf results. But I will be more interested this year to see how all of the new players fare.

We finished the first round at even par and tied for 5th. AZST is -7 in the lead.

Because of expected weather tomorrow, the tournament organizers changed the schedule to play 36 today. Even so they had to suspend play at the end of the day with a few players still on the course.
Stanford completed its round and will finish T6 in a strong field. 4 of the 5 Stanford players broke par at least once. Frosh Jay Leng was the top finisher at T14.

This post will be about a Stanford men's golf alum, but Patrick Rodgers is all but guaranteed to have at least a share of the lead at the PGA Tour Signature Event Genesis Invitational (so top 70 guys on PGA Tour) heading into tomorrow's final round. Tourney at Torrey Pines this year due to the Palisades Fire.

And, now McNealy is leading at -11 on the 11th hole, and Rogers is tied for 2nd at -9 on the 5th.

Maverick played a remarkable round of golf, posting the low round of the day at 64. But par'ing the par 5 18th left an opening for Ludvig Aberg to claim the title.
McNealy solo 2nd; Patrick Rodgers a very respectable T-3.

One final comment. Maverick McNealy won the RSM classic in November, but I actually think his second-place finish at the Genesis is more impressive. The Genesis is one of just eight PGA Signature events with enhanced purses and fields. 46 of the Top 50 FedEx PGA points leaders were in the field. McNealy is now 7th in FedEx points (started at 25) and his Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is 14th.

Patrick Rodgers turned pro in 2014 and has played in 287 tour events. He's had four runner-up and four third place finishes, 14 top five finishes and 28 top ten finishes. The Genesis Invitational second place finish is easily his best finish and his winnings for that event boosted his career earnings by 13%. He's currently 21st in FedEx points (started the tournament at 106). His OWGR is 75th.

The list of golfers who finished behind McNealy and Rodgers is impressive: Cantlay, Fleetwood, Finau, McIlroy, Glover, Clark, Bradley, Scott, etc. And what I liked best about McNealy's tournament is that he improved every day with an impressive closing round, going 75-70-68-64. That 64 was the best round in the tournament by two shots.
Next Signature event is the Arnold Palmer Invitational in early March.
Incidentally, there's quite an SF Bay Area contingent of PGA touring pros form northern California colleges. Stanford has Joseph Bramlett, Patrick Rodgers, Maverick McNealy, Isaiah Salinda, Michael Thorbjornesen, Karl Vilips, Tiger Woods and Brandon Wu. There's also James Hahn, Max Homa, Byeong Hun, Michael Kim and Collin Morikawa of Cal; Mark Hubbard and Kevin Velo of SJSU and Matt McCarty (Santa Clara, with a tour win, the RSM last year). 16 PGA touring pros at once, out of the roughly 253* touring pros eligible to play on the PGA tour.
* The 253 includes two senior American players with tour exemptions and 82 international players who have exemptions to play occasional tournaments over here, leaving 169 U. S. touring pros.

Regarding the MGolf team, I guess we are a few wins below the 500. Sounds like we need to win our tournament at Stanford Golf Course to make the NCAA's (short of winning the ACC conference tournament of course)?

MGolf has had a disappointing season so far. No one really has had a good tournament. Only 1 top 10 finish by an individual and that was 10th. None of the frosh (the #1 recruiting class in the country) has stood out.
The team has 3 more chances to beat enough teams to qualify for a regional at-large selection - the Goodwin at Stanford, the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo and the ACC championship. But nothing in the results so far would have you believe that they can turn the season around.

Karl Villips is a winner on the PGA Tour. After being tied for the lead, Villips blitzed the final 5 holes to win going away by 3 shots. Joseph Bramlett finished solo third, which is his best finish on Tour.
Villips qualifies for the Players Championship, the majors, and is already being talked about as a President's Cup selection the next time the competition is played.
Quite a meteoric rise from playing college golf less than a year ago for Stanford MGolf, but the Cardinal alums continue to produce on Tour this season!

At the Arnold Palmer invitational, Patrick Rodgers is in with a -2 overall, finishing T22.
Salinda finished +5, tied for 45th. He did pretty well on days 2-4, but opened with a 77. Not bad for a tour rookie.
Unfortunately, Mav McNealy missed the cut with a 73-80. Cut was 148 after two rounds.
