2024 Stanford at Notre Dame Predictions Thread - george - 10-08-2024

So far the Cardboard community has only favored us in one game this year (Cal Poly).  What say you now?  Are we brave enough to pick the upset?

Our Defense put in yet again short field positions all day.
Holds Domers to "only" 37 and declares moral victory.
Our offense makes a few good runs and few good passes, but doesn't string enough together for sustained drives the length of the field.
Coach TT having been privately questioned for continual 4th and goforits that don't work out, instead turns to Karty II who kicks 4 field goals.
But we otherwise don't get in the end zone.
A long trip home with guys binge watching Gangs of London on Netflix, or funny dog and cat videos on YouTube.

I don't think it makes much of a difference in the result, but barring a setback this week, we will likely have Daniels at QB. He was fully suited up and available for emergency duty vs. VaTech. We can infer that he had a lower ankle sprain that has recovered nicely. TT was quite confident in his availability in today's presser.

TT also said that Ford has a chance to play this week, which is surprising and dubious to me. TT was more optimistic than when he claimed that Jay Green was "questionable" last week, which was a straight-up lie to gain a competitive advantage. If I'm reading the tea leaves correctly, Ford won't play this week but he's not done for the season (e.g., Achilles rupture or bone fracture) as I had feared.

Okay, I missed it. What happened to Ford?

This play below happened. He was pounding the turf in pain and needed two guys to carry him off the field without putting any weight on the leg. The awkwardness of the play, the way he planted his foot, and the aftermath had me worried. The most upsetting part is that it occurred in garbage time with less than a minute to go (although I don’t blame TT for keeping him in.) If he’s lucky, it’s just a painful but not terribly severe ankle sprain.

Not me, man. They're trying their best to outdistance themselves from that Northern Illinois loss. They hung 66 on Purdue, 31 on #15 Louisville...and they've had two weeks off. And they still want revenge from our not-so-recent upset over them. They beat us 56-23 last year. This is going to be ugly.

I am looking for small victories. A good tackle here, an excellent block there, some unanticipated good plays. Not too confident otherwise.

Vacated wins are expunged from a team’s record and do not have any impact on the opponent’s record.    Therefore, ND’s regular season record was 0-0 and Stanford’s remains 10-2.

I do think they will run into one more win this year. 3-9 seems to be the new normal. In order of my perceived likelihood:

1. Weak Florist
2. NC State
3. SJSU
4. SMU
5. Louisville
6. Cal
7. Notre Dame

So book a Notre Dame win Saturday. Because.

Karma catches up to ND for Stephan Taylor's 2012 touchdown that was denied.  Stanford wins on the last play of the game on a video review of a call on the field that Lamson was tackled short of the goal line.  Call is reversed.  Stanford wins.  Irish fans lose their minds and drown their sorrows in whiskey.  Manti T'eo's dead fake girlfriend turns over in her grave.

I commend your amazing perspicacity!
The only part I see slightly differently is that in a miraculous twist of events, Manti T'eo's fake girlfriend turns out to be real, has not died, and in fact, in a tribute to classic football, streaks across the field just before the halftime show, is tackled in the end zone by security, covered with the nearest available apparel, that happens to be a Stanford Cardinal towel, and is whisked off the field.

Just watched Coach's pre-Notre Dame game presser, and once again kinda discouraged.
As once again an inordinate amount of time spent praising up and down the other team's roster and coaching staff.
I understand why Coach does this, he can hardly say: They're a bunch of pansies and we're gonna kick their tushy around.
But this has become a monotonous big part of every presser, droning on ad infinitum what a great team with great players and great coaches they are, with detailed comments on many of their best players, how hard to stop, how hard to prepare for, blah blah blah.
I watch to try and glean the more interesting comments which usually have to do with our players status, which Coach also very demure to comment upon in much detail, so you have to try and read between the lines, which other posters are better at than I.
One specific bone to pick, a question came up about how to utilize our Tight Ends better. Which caught my attention as I think this has been a much overlooked part of our game. A missed opportunity perhaps for more quick short yardage gains that might be more successful than the often long throws down the field that land in the neighborhood of our (usually covered) wide outs, if by adjacent zip codes you mean neighborhood.
Anyway, Coach's reply was along the lines of being happy with our TE production, and he mentioned they have contributed in blocking and in running as well.
I already documented on another thread the underused (IMO) completions made to our TE's this season.
Which is a small (IMO) percentage of the total completions.
And I didn't recall much running plays to our TE's? as Coach's reply seemed to indicate we had done.
So I looked up box scores and couldn't find any, as in NONE, running plays to our TE's this season.
So in spite of suggestions to the contrary, it still remains to my perception that our TE's are primarily blockers and not used often for much else.
Which again seems a missed opportunity considering how many of our long passes down the field don't connect.

As I posted earlier, watching/listening to TT's pressers is, unfortunately, a waste of time. He obfuscates and distracts more than illuminates. (I hasten to add again that I like TT as a person and a representative of Stanford.)

If memory serves, Bill Walsh used to make the other side sound so good, that he left the impression that the 49ers had no chance. Right before he annihilated the competition.
