2024 SMU vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - george - 10-15-2024

Normally I rely on msqueri's excellent summaries to make me feel better about the state of Stanford football.  However, his Notre Dame screed left me bereft.  I'll keep the predictions threads going, but I fear all joy has left the building.

RE: 2024 SMU vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - SkiBum80 - 10-16-2024

While having left the building, Joy was accompanied by Elvis, Coach Shaw, Fear of Trees, Our Passing Game, and Respect was seen hobbling towards the exit on crutches.
Nonetheless, hope springs eternal (in simple minds).
So I've a lot of hope for this game.
Not to win of course.
But rather to slightly delay the total exit of Respect.
So I predict we still get beat, handily, but our D Line still plays tough, even while our Secondary has too many mistakes.
And that our Offense actually has a bit of a pulse.
Giving the faithful proletariat some straws to grasp onto for the following week.

RE: 2024 SMU vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - needle - 10-16-2024

I foolishly posted last week that Stanford had a chance to upset Notre Dame.

Not going to say anything like that this week, but I will point to SMU being one of the most penalized teams in the country. They average 75.67 yards in penalties per game, ranking No. 124 out of 133 FBS teams. Not saying they're going to self-destruct, but I'd say it's a possibility.

Stanford ranks No. 11 nationally with only 36 penalty yards per game.

The scores I'm seeing showing them in the thirties and us in the teens sound about right.
Just hope we stay as healthy as possible as we transition to some games we actually have a chance if winning.

Every game this season I predicted Stanford to do better than what they did.   I'm not going to let that happen again.  SMU 35 Stanford 14.

So you have more faith that you will improve in your prediction than the team will improve in their play.  That's fair, but what do you get if you're right?

Needless to say I hope my prediction is wrong and Stanford wins.  I always cheer for Stanford to win in any sport.

If I'm right I get more points on george's score board. Isn't that the goal of everyone making a prediction here? What do you get for making a wrong prediction?

I get the comforting feeling of pride that I stood by my alma mater and never lost hope despite the long odds against victory.  It softens the blow of witnessing a loss on the gridiron by our brave Cardinal football warriors.  I get to scroll down George's list, and scroll, and scroll, to the bottom to see that name "martyup" sitting there like a beacon to my undying faith in all teams Cardinal.

In religion, faith is a matter of belief WITHOUT evidence. Repeated prediction of Cardinal football wins since week 3 seems to me to be a matter of performative “belief” AGAINST all available evidence for the sake of “supporting” your alma mater. But a higher form of supporting one’s alma mater is, arguably, being candid and accurate about its strengths and weaknesses. One is reminded of those GOP legislator/acolytes who consistently “support” DJT week after week regardless of how poorly he does “on the playing field” instead of calling out his outrageous performance candidly and accurately.

Not that I have any standing, but on behalf of President Levin, the Board of Trustees, the AD Muir, Coach TT, the team itself, the Stanford Band, the Tree mascot, the Dollies, and any other unrelated person I am missing, we applaud you for your selfless service in taking one for the team.

RE: 2024 SMU vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - MVDan - 10-17-2024

Gotta go with SMU with Daniels starting (41-14). If Elijah Brown gets in the game, the Stanford score could be higher.

RE: 2024 SMU vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - Mick - 10-17-2024

SMU QB had career high 394 yards of offense including a 59 yard TD run.

SMU has allowed no sacks in four of six games.

SMU has forced at least one turnover in the last five games and in 15 of their past 16 games.

Cardinal ranks 118th in the country, allowing 266.7 yards per game.

SMU's RB Brashard Smith, transfer from Miami ranks 7th in the national in total TDs (8) and ninth in all-purpose ypg (151.2), ninth in ypc (7.3).

Thanks to the 1936 Rose Bowl, Stanford is 1-0 all-time against SMU.

I'm gonna go with blind irrationality: faith in opposition to very obvious evidence to the contrary.  It helps that I won't be able to watch the game.  (Hey Publius, I'm gonna be in your neck of the woods again, same ol' same ol'.)

If Stanford miraculously wins, clearly you're the jinx, and you're not allowed to watch any more games (until we lose again.)

RE: 2024 SMU vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - qwerty49 - 10-17-2024

I think we score twice. That seems to be par for our offense. Depends on when - FGs would normally happen early but not after things are out of hand and we have to go for it on 4th and 5. That’s the interesting O/U bet IMO.

Stanford beats SMU, 23-21.
That's what they get for rejecting Calvinism.

Damn right. TT needs more hornswaglers, scalawags, et. al.,  on his roster. I see too many nice guys.  Are there any more Skovs out there?
