#2 MWP hosts #2 USC and #1 UCLA: 1PM Sat & Sun - M T - 11-02-2024
Men's Water Polo hosts USC and UCLA at 1PM on Saturday and Sunday.
Stanford swept both those teams in L.A. earlier (but then fell to Cal). If Stanford can sweep this weekend, I think they'd be assured of having the top seed for the MPSF tournament (even if they lose to Cal again but win the other 2 remaining games). Being top seed for that tournament means they likely would go to the National Championship tournament (held at Stanford this year) even if they lose the MPSF championship final (or even the semifinal)
MWP is one of the Stanford teams that has a good shot at extending the national championship streak.
Oddly it seems, Stanford is not streaming these matches (more ACC fallout, I'd guess), so you'll have to come in person. Come early as it will be crowded. I believe this is a free event.

It wasn't that close. It was 9-3 with 2 minutes to go. USC never lead, and was only tied at 1-1 and 3-3.
Only 12 ejections (one pair was a double ejection) called in the full game, so it wasn't all 6-on-5 all the time.
Obviously, Stanford's defense was outstanding. The Stanford goalie had a lot of saves, which highlights that the defenders were funneling shots toward him. I was less impressed with Stanford's offense, but clearly they got it done.

Per gostanford.com, Overnight.com is streaming tomorrow's game against UCLA. It is a pay service that I subscribe to which I have watched some previous Stanford polo games on. $10 a month. I am watching a replay of today's game on it right now. The NCAA tournament is at Stanford this year and I bought passes so it sure would be nice if they make the tournament.

Yeah, UCLA was far better than USC, and than Stanford today. UCLA rotated through their players quickly. (After they scored their first goal, all 6 field players were replaced.)
Stanford was down 5-6 at the half. 5-8 after 3 quarters. And then it got ugly.
Stanford's defense was weak today. Arms were not up. Many more shots got past the Stanford goalie.
Late in the 3rd quarter, I noticed there were a total of 7 ejections against Stanford, and only 1 against UCLA. Contributing to that was that Stanford wasn't getting the ball into the hole (player 2 meters in front of the goal).
IMO, Stanford was beaten in all aspects of the game, both offense & defense. The UCLA goalie blocked two 5-meter shots.

Does LSJU have a chance to make the championship tournament? LSJU is hosting next month's championships at Avery pool (first time since 2018).
Next month's event was originally awarded to UC San Diego but the NCAA switched sites to LSJU because UCSD failed to submit a form about compliance with NCAA policies on sexual violence prevention.

Yes, of course they do. Stanford, at 3-2 in MPSF play, sits alone in 2nd place in MPSF West. That seeds them 3rd at the MSPF tourney (at UCLA). They will likely face USC in the MPSF semis. Stanford has beaten USC (2-3) twice this season. Cal is 1-4 with the win over Stanford.
Based on history, it seems a good bet that the MPSF West teams (seeds 1, 3, 5, 7) will beat the MPSF East teams (seeds 2,4,6,8,9). The game labelled "Game 9: West semifinal" will likely be Stanford vs USC. If Stanford wins Game 9, they are in Game 15 "West championship". If Stanford loses Game 9, they would play in Game 13 "West 3rd place", likely against Cal.
Last year, 3 MPSF West teams went to the NC championship. I'm assuming there is no reason that won't happen this year (but I don't really know).
If Stanford makes it to the finals of the MPSF tourney, they will be one of the teams in the NC championship. If they win the 3rd place game, they should make it to the NC championships (possible exception is if UCLA isn't one of the top 2 teams). If Stanford loses the 3rd place game, then there is still a chance they could be invited to the NC tournament (seems unlikely, but Stanford is hosting).

(I happened to be looking at crime rate info recently. Stanford doesn't fare so well.)

LSJU won its regular season finale over Cal in the Big Splash tonight at Avery, 16-11. MPSF tournament next weekend.

LSJU is in the championship tournament. First round game vs. Princeton on Friday, Dec. 6. Winner likely faces top seed Ucla on Saturday the 7th.
Princeton roster has over a dozen players from California (incl. several from SHP) and a handful from Europe. They beat Cal this season, lost to Usc and lost twice to Ucla (once in OT).

That's their reward for defeating Stanford in the Mountain Pacific championship semis. Stanford's consolation prize is a spot in the NCAA tournament at all.
Reminds me of the sales contest in Glengarry Glen Ross. 1st prize - a Cadillac. 2nd prize - a set of steak knives. Everyone else gets fired.
