MWP NC: Semi: UCLA vs Stanford, Maples, Sat 2PM - M T - 12-06-2024

No surprise, Stanford and #1 UCLA won their first round matches in the Men's Water Polo National Championship on Friday.  The two will take to the pool for the semifinal at Stanford on Saturday at 2PM.

Stanford beat UCLA 9-7 in October but lost 8-13 a month ago.

Tickets are $40 per day ($25 for youth & seniors) and are still available.  Saturday 2 PM semi  ;  Sunday 3 PM final  (Note: "Buy tickets" did not show up for me in Firefox)
All general admission; just arrive early to get a good seat.

LSJU beat Princeton 15-8 after falling behind 3-2 in the first quarter. LSJU was up 6-4 at halftime and 9-4 in the third quarter.

FWIW, I think all but one of Princeton's goals were scored by foreign players - Serbia, Croatia, Spain, Hungary. Their only American goal scorer was the older brother of LSJU freshman star Ryan Ohl, who scored once for LSJU. There was a fan sitting by himself on the sunny side, wearing a custom t-shirt that was half orange, half cardinal. Might've been Mr. Ohl?

Beat the Bruins! I just checked their stats and their star freshman Ryder Dodd (youngest member of bronze medal Team USA at Paris Olympics) scored 90 goals this season . . . That is Tony Azevedo (and Bret Bonnani) level of goal scoring. LSJU held him to just 2 goals in each of their games. He scored 4 today in the quarterfinal win over Salem.

Fordham (32-0) is in New York City.
On their MWP team, one player is from New York, 3 from Connecticut.
More than the East Coast players, 8 are from California.
More than US players, 13 players are from Europe & S. Africa.
(Hungary 4, Italy 4, Spain, France, S. Africa, Malta, Greece)

It was 17-14. Ucla advances to tomorrow's final against either USC or Fordham.

LSJU shot over 60% (probably 75 % in the scintillating first half) - and it still wasn't enough. Too much Ryder Dodd, he had 6 goals, for an even 100 on the season. He's only 18, a prodigy like Tiger Woods, McEnroe, Andrew Luck, Rose Zhang. Already one of the best Americans, college or pro. And he's not a giant; listed at just 6 feet tall. His last goal reminded me of Tony Azevedo.

The LSJU disallowed goals and blocked penalty shot were tough to overcome.

LSJU graduates at least 4 fantastic redshirt seniors, Painter, Jensen, Pittman, Parrish, they combined for 8 goals today and over 170 goals this season. Hope to see them on Team USA for the LA Olympics!

USC outlasted Fordham 18-16 in the other semifinal. It was Fordham's first loss of the season (32-1).

I left Avery after the Stanford game but per the water polo message boards, the Fordham euros were playing dirty, literally punching USC guys in the face, and the provoking worked for a while. USC had 11 exclusions in just the first period.

One of USC's top players got red carded and will miss the final. We'll see if USC has anything left tomorrow after the bruising OT game against hyper aggressive Euros. 

USC vs. Ucla, 3 pm PST on ESPN-U. I guess for LSJU fans, the only good news is one of them is going to lose.

I didn't stick around for the USC-Fordham game either, but I watched the Fordham-CSULB game video.  Fordham looked really good in the 2nd half.
If I recall correctly, the UCLA-Stanford game had 13 ejections in 4 quarters.  Fordham-USC had 35 in 4 quarters + OT.

I arrived about 40 minutes before the Stanford game, and chose a spot at the center of the pool, 3 rows up.  Turns out that the WWP team was in front & to the side of me.  I'm not sure what language was being spoken behind me, but I think they were the family of some player. I'm guessing the M&W swimming teams were there too.  It was interesting to be among people that knew how the game is called (& played, of course).  The only downside was that when they stood, I'd have to stand as well or miss the play.

Ucla wins 11-8. It was tied at halftime but Usc looked worn out in the second half. LSJU could've beaten Usc today. 

Ryder Dodd and his fellow Olympian brother combined for 4 Ucla goals. Not sure Ryder Dodd was 100%, he uncharacteristically lost a quarter-opening sprint and was replaced for another.

I think LSJU is hosting next year's tournament as well. Per the earlier post, LSJU was the late-arranged substitute site this year after the designated host UCSD failed to submit a Title IX compliance form to the NCAA on time.

Avery pool really is the nicest outdoor collegiate swim stadium in the country. Any other CardBoarders/Booties old enough to remember when USC and John Naber visited an SRO Avery (fka deGuerre) for a dual meet in early 1977? This was after Naber had starred at the Montreal Olympics, along with Stanford's Mike Bruner. Sadly, with a few notable exceptions, dual meets have long since gone the way of the dodo bird.

Nope, wasn't there for the 1977 dual meet.

But, I flew up from L.A. for the 1969 dual meet when Peter Daland's USC team had not lost any of 108 dual meets in a row over 12 years but was going to face a stiff test from Stanford.   The two teams had tied in 1967.
(Of course I was cheering for Stanford; I was NOT a student at USC.)

It was one of those impulsive things one does (a very rare thing for me).  The upcoming meet in 1969 at Stanford had gotten publicity in the L.A. area where I was going to school.  That was my generation of swimmers;  I knew a few, but I had been watching all their names and times for the last decade.  I didn't decide to fly up for sure until Saturday morning for the mid-afternoon meet.

I think the cab ride from SFO was more expensive than the round-trip airfare. (I had never been to the Bay Area and hadn't realized how far Stanford was from SFO)

As expected, it was a very close meet.  The final score was 57-56..... 

USC fell to Stanford.

Great story and Daily article. LSJU had won the 1967 NCAA swim championship so that 1969 dual meet vs. USC was epic for sure.

The Daily article mentions Jeff Hammett, LJSU star sprint freestyler. He later was on faculty in the athletics dept., in charge of deGuerre (now Avery) pool and the instructor for all of the LSJU scuba diving classes, for which I was a TA for several quarters. One day I will channel my inner Jacket3ree and try to type out a Hammett story or two.
