So he worked at the Daily and KZSU as an undergrad, founded a company that contended that there's a shortfall of "beneficial software products in sports," worked at Oracle, allegedly "mentored startup founders and young executives" on "leadership and strategy," and will "build a front office" for the football program (whatever that means). So far I fail to see that, given his background, this hire is going to do anything substantive to promote Stanford football's renaissance. Can any of you help me see the positive value added by this position and hire?

Enthusiasm is necessary but not sufficient for the job, and over-enthusiasm can sometimes be a barrier for effectiveness.

Sam was my editor when I first started covering sports at The Daily. He was the human embodiment of EUTM when it came to Stanford sports (not just football). But what made him impactful, and what I remember most about him, was a genuine curiosity. 

He was curious about other people, which allowed him to connect not only with the like-minded folks in the newsroom, but also with the athletes across the various Stanford teams he covered. I was always impressed by the ease with which he could move from interaction to interaction.

He was also thoughtful and creative about the ways in which The Daily could improve its coverage, and empowered staff to contribute ideas and take ownership of developing these projects. In my biased opinion, the Daily sports section experienced something of a golden era during and immediately after his time there, and he absolutely deserves some credit for that. More than a couple future professional sports journalists developed during Sam's era.

I haven't kept in touch with him post graduation, but it seems his professional path has followed a trajectory of using his curiosity and thoughtfulness to make products and people better. If he can translate those attributes to this role -- and from the job description on his Linkedin, it seems like he will have some latitude to do so -- I have real confidence that he can be successful.

We don't really know what this job will entail yet, but if you're looking for someone with a deep and personal understanding of the history and culture of Stanford football and what has made it successful in the past, combined with very relevant experience in the NIL space, Sam's your guy.

Many on this board have been for some time lamenting how far behind Stanford has been in the NIL arms race.  Well, it seems that this hire by AL will hit that problem on the head.  I'm excited.

I mean, you don't have to have been a Stanford fan for too long to remember when we did do worse than 3-9.  I am excited about changes, and I'm a big believer in people who are passionate about Stanford.  But as bad as things are, they can definitely get worse.

I mean, you don't have to have been a Stanford fan for too long to remember when we did do worse than 3-9.  I am excited about changes, and I'm a big believer in people who are passionate about Stanford.  But as bad as things are, they can definitely get worse.

I know most of us far exceed the bar for duration of fandom, but Stanford hasn't been worse than 3-9 since before some current Stanford students were even born. I do think I feel worse right now than I did after that 2006 season because we swiftly fired Harris after just one bad season (we were a missed INT call vs UC Davis away from making a bowl in 2005) whereas I have lost all hope at a turnaround next season with Taylor still as HC.
