MBB: @ Notre Dame, 6:00 on ESPNU -

Stanford favored by 1.5, O/U is 141.5, implied score is 71.5-70. Notre Dame has a record of 12-17, 6-12 in the ACC, 9-5 at home.
A win for Stanford would give them their first 20 win season since 2019-20. Stanford is currently in 7th place in the ACC and has clinched a first round bye in the ACC. A win in either of the last 2 games (or a loss by Georgia Tech at Wake Forest on Saturday) will clinch at least 7th place. They could still get up to 4th, 5th, or 6th, but that would require wins in both of the last 2 games (plus losses on Saturday for SMU, UNC, &/or Wake Forest), so we can hold off on thinking about that until after the Notre Dame game.
The Domers are currently tied with Cal in 13th place. They could finish anywhere from 10th through 16th, so they should be motivated to jockey for a somewhat better seed for the ACC tourney.
ND is led by Markus Burton (#3, 6'0/190 So G) who was voted to the preseason All-ACC 1st team. Last season he was the ACC Rookie of the Year, and in high school he was named Mr. Basketball in Indiana. He is averaging 21.1 ppg (he recently passed Maxime to become #1 in the ACC) on 45.1% FG shooting (12th in the ACC) and also averages 3.1 assists per game. He is 10th in steals (1.5/game) and tied with Maxime for 14th in 3pt FGs with 1.93/game. In their most recent 2 games, playing without 2 injured starters (more on that below), Burton has picked up the slack by scoring 30 points at Clemson, then 29 at Wake Forest. In those 2 games he shot 17-35 on FGs, 4-9 on 3s, and 21-23 on FTs.
Two other sure starters are Tae Davis (#7, 6'9/215 Jr F) and Kebba Njie (#14, 6'10/250 Jr F). Davis averages 15.8 ppg (15th) on 50.2% FG shooting (3rd). He averages 5.4 rpg. He is in his 2nd year as a starter at ND after spending his freshman year at Seton Hall. Njie leads the Domers with 6.1 rpg (20th) and averages 6.3 ppg on 55.2% shooting. He is also a 2nd year starter at ND after starting at Penn State as a freshman.
Two other players had been full-time starters until recent injuries.
-Braeden Shrewsberry, son of head coach Micah Shrewsberry, is out for the season. His 72 3pt FGs and his 3pt FG% (36.9%) are both 3rd in the ACC.
-Matt Allocco (#41, 6'4/190 Gr G) has missed 7 of the last 8 games with a wrist injury, but on Saturday it was reported that ND is hoping that he'll be able to return to action against Stanford. He averages 9.0 ppg and 3.0 assists/game. He shoots 45.5% on 3pt FGs and leads the ACC with an assist/TO ratio of 3.67. Allocco is a grad transfer from Princeton where he was 2nd team All-Ivy as a junior & senior.
In their most recent game (which Notre Dame led for most of the way before losing 74-71 at Wake Forest) the starters in place of Shrewsberry & Alloco were J.R. Konieczny (#20, 6'7/205 RJr G) and Nikita Konstantynovskyi (#25, 6'10/260 Gr F). Troy Clardy should have fun with those 2 names. Konieczny is a home-town kid who played HS basketball at St. Joseph HS in South Bend. Konstantynovskyi is from Kyiv, Ukraine, but has seen a lot of the U.S., spending 1 year at Northeastern A&M, 2 at Tulsa, 1 at Monmouth, before arriving in South Bend.
It's another big game for Stanford. A winnable road game - a chance for some success outside the friendly confines of Maples Pavilion.

Raynaud starting strong, and we have a 7-5 lead over ND 5 minutes in. I feel another double-double coming.
Update: Raynaud’s touch seems to be slightly off on his short lefty hook shots. We are down 10-7 with 10:40 to go.
Also noting that when Blakes is playing, he seems to be letting someone else (Gealer, Agarwal, etc) handle the ball. Hope there isn’t something wrong with him.
Both teams shooting poorly.

Raynaud is shooting 1-7 FG and ND is up 14-10 now.
Stanford is shooting 13.6%, and ND is shooting 26.7%. Yikes. Jaylen Thompson makes two FTs and Stanford is only down two, 12-14.

Raynaud is shooting 1-7 FG and ND is up 14-10 now.
Raynaud had 4 pts off the bat (FG and 2FT), then nada. Also 6 rebounds. 6 minutes left in 1st half.
Edited to add 1 more FG for Raynaud. Feeling better about the double-double prediction
We shoot 23% from the floor and head into the locker room up 24-21. Raynaud 10pts, 8 rebounds.
Gealer staying hot with 3 treys, 9pts.

Stanford up 24-21 at halftime. Bad offense on both sides, but Benny Gealer coming up big again. 3-4 on 3s for 9 points. Also 4 rebounds. Double-double for Benny??

Stanford up 46-40 with 6:52 left in the game. Let's keep it that way...
Getting whistled for a lot... ND has 21 FT attempts to Stanford's 11. Home cooking?
Tied at 46 now.

Why are Thompson and Cammann hoisting up threes when Reynaud has been so effective this half?? Before tonight, Thompson had attempted only 6 threes all season, Cammann just 12. They have shot 6 threes so far in this game and haven't made any.

13-0 run by ND. complete meltdown. all we do is jack up three pointers. There's a reason our players are WIDE OPEN! get the ball inside or blakes needs to attack the basket.

We gave away that game. Players shooting threes when Max was being effective down low, long stretches of not scoring, allowing USB to go on runs.
We still had the lead with a minute to go and took 2 lousy shots while USB hit their 3 for the win.
Pitiful basketball by both teams today.

A loss feels about right. At no point have I ever felt that Stanford is good enough to win four straight league games.
But I can easily imagine a feeling of great disappointment after such a hard fought game. I really want this team to avoid a losing streak of three games to close out the year.

What a disappointing ending. Raynauld helps way too much off one of their better shooters leading to an open 3 which gives them the lead. We can barely get off a shot to tie the game even after calling a timeout. Lots of regrets on how the last 10 minutes and close to the game played out. Blakes was visibly mad the ball was not in his hands. I concur with him.

20 wins is what I want....well - also, more offensive balance and consistency, and stop jacking up 3s

Bad loss. Trainwreck in the clutch.

LSJU shot just 19 of 57. Reynaud, Benny and Blakes made 16 of those 19 FG. Yet in crunch time, it was everyone else trying out their Luca Doncic imitations. Good grief.
LSJU W BB were even worse, 17 of 54.
Recency bias, and a rare doubleheader of dismal play, but tonight must be among the most unsightly nights ever of LSJU basketball on offense?

Wednesday night game on the other side of the country coming up on dead week with finals starting in eleven days...I could see that affecting performance.

No matter how I look at it, not defeating ND is disappointing. On paper, we are the better team, but in the event we were not. There are "reasons" undoubtedly, just like there were reasons for our previous years of futility. I think we are all hoping that coaching deficiencies are no longer one of those reasons. Since few of us (if any) expect to defeat Louisville on the road, we are going to need at least one win in the ACC tournament to get 20 wins. Not going to be easy, unfortunately.

After watching both the men and women lose yesterday, I was too disappointed to post. It was an ugly day for Stanford basketball. Go womens' golf!
