Ouch!

USA Swimming’s gain is Stanford’s loss

RE: Women’s Swimming Meehan resigned - Spiny_Norman - 04-11-2025

There goes another. As recently as last year, Stanford had 6 women's coaches who had won NCAA championships in their respective sports. Now down to 3 (Walker for golf, Byrnes for rowing, Ratcliffe for soccer).

John Tanner, WWP
Kevin Hambly, WVB

The losses are Lele, Tara, and Greg Meehan (in case you were thinking about it like I was).

My mind spins out into paranoid hypotheses when successful coaches leave, but I'll take a breath and say that it should be a good thing that successful coaches are called up to the national team system.  Happy for Meehan, hope it's everything he dreams of and more.  Hope the AD, interim or otherwise, can get a great hire onboard.

RE: Women’s Swimming Meehan resigned - M T - 04-11-2025

If the House agreement limits rosters, that's got to hurt Virginia, and effectively help Stanford.  That ought to make Stanford very attractive to any candidate coach.

RE: Women’s Swimming Meehan resigned - Nobadeer - 04-11-2025

Coach Meehan leaves on a high note after the team way exceeded expectations for runner-up to UVa at the NCAA meet. (If Curzan hadn't transferred to UVa, LSJU might've won this year - she scored 57 points, and UVa's margin of victory was 101).

Three-peat NCs for his teams in 2017-18-19 (Ledecky, Manuel, Eastin, Forde, Steve Stenstrom's daughter, et al.) and it probably would've been four straight but covid canceled the 2020 NCAA meet.

This year's team was hardly affected by the ACC travel. The only East Coast trip was for the conference meet.

Per swimswam, ~ 76 % of LSJU's points at NCAA are set to return next year, assuming no transfers. Hoping for the best for coach Meehan, for his successor at LJSU and for the LSJU W swim program!

Any ideas who will be his successor?

Stanford absolutely would not have won during 2020. Virginia was well on its way to winning that year with Kate Douglass leading the charge. Stanford wasn't going to compete that year - they didn't have the elite swimmers needed.

“Absolutely”, huh?

It seems SwimSwam had a different opinion than your strongly worded opinion
https://swimswam.com/2019-2020-ncaa-womens-swimming-diving-power-ranks-final-edition/

SwimSwam’s article on the Meehan appointment doesn’t mention possible replacements for Stanford.
Note that his new position is for the US national team (men& women)

Sakibomb speaks absolutely the truth

RE: Women’s Swimming Meehan resigned - Nobadeer - 04-12-2025

Well, ordinarily I wouldn't doubt BobK or Saki, but as an LSJU alum and fan and devout user of the deGuerre/Avery pools since 1976, I have faith that Coach Meehan would've coaxed that 4th NCAA title from the team in 2020!

The meet was scheduled for Atlanta which would've meant the dreaded 3-time zone travel and adjustment, but the 2017-18-19 championship teams all had to travel to the Midwest and East for those meets.

Megan Abarca has led the Artistic Swimming team to two Collegiate National Championships (2021 & 2025).

Unfortunately doesn't count as an ncaa championship. Same goes for our lightweight rowing and sailing championships.

I would also assume that the championship wouldn't extend our streak of nattys but not sure who the arbiter of that is.

RE: Women’s Swimming Meehan resigned - Treebound - 04-13-2025

I'm very sorry to see this as Greg and his family are absolutely class acts!  These are wonderful people and these will be very tough shoes to fill.  I wish Greg, Tess and family much luck and good fortune as they move onto this next chapter.    I'm sad for Stanford, but happy for the Meehan family.

The school can claim anything.   Undoubtedly the AD would try to highlight that title as a continuation of some level of success if Stanford does not claim one or more NCAA team titles.  It would be similar to what Cal was doing with rugby and Men's rowing with the Directors' cup.   For a number of years Cal would wrap up the season noting they finished 5th or 8th or whatever, but would have finished higher if rowing and rugby were included.

The inclusion of non-NCAA titles gets murky because there are so, so many sports with national titles with at least some schools giving that sport varsity level status.   (sailing, squash, rubgy, football, rowing, etc.)

If rubgy involves massage, I clearly chose the wrong sport.
