What did Yogi Berra say - something like, "nobody goes there any more, it's too crowded"?
Last night, we went to Zotts. It was nearly 8 pm. Parking lot overflowing. And the wait was . . . one hour for a table, or 30 minutes for a shared table. Every high school kid within a 10 mile radius seemed to be there (PAUSD started today, Menlo Park starts next week). We ended up going elsewhere rather than wait amongst all the high schoolers!

Sounds like you may have had an anomalous experience due to first day of HS. I've gone to Zott's at least 8 times in the past year before/after events at Stanford and while it's almost always crowded and sometimes a wait of 10-20 minutes, I don't mind - I love the vibe, the greatly expanded and improved facilities, and the extremely reasonably priced and tasty food. Old Zotts had old world charm but it had nothing on this extremely well run biergarten. Glad to hear they're invested in and investing in this Stanford institution of yore.

Super happy that they're doing well. Those HS students will make memories there and keep coming back to patronize the establishment. Truly a community institution.

I like the Alpine Inn. I ate at the Goose last night which I also like, but miss the Oasis which I liked above all the Stanford hang outs.

Each of them had their own atmosphere with both plusses and minuses. IMO the O had by far the "best" food. However the Goose deviled eggs and chili was uniquely enjoyable. The Chili recipe has changed over the years. Right now, IMO it is not as flavorful as it needs to be.
Zott's used to be a place for a burger and a pitcher with friends. The "new" Zott's is more upscale. It is making lots of money, but IMO it is still trying to figure out what it will be going forward. Does it want to compete with the Goose, Buck's, Parkside Grille, or Flea Street Cafe?

Zott's seems to be trying to carve out a different space than any of those places. It is the only one where I see kids and seems to be trying to be a local gathering place for the whole family. The Goose, Buck's, Parkside Grille, or Flea Street Cafe are pretty much adults only.

Zott's (not Gott's 2006Alum - Ha) is an amazing success right now. It must have the most throughput of any restaurant in the bay area. They have done a great job attracting multiple segments and people will travel to get there. The trailer addition was a smart move given that they have a captive audience in the bullpen. I'm grateful to the families that rescued Zott's as it was close to being shut down by a group that didn't want the traffic and the noise. There's no place better for a casual, outdoor meal in the area and the setting is fantastic. Students love it (at least my three did/do) and keeping the Stanford memorabelia was a the right thing to do.
