Stanford Wrestling - BigBadBob - 11-03-2025

Hey! Just curious if anyone knows why Nico Provo or Hunter Garvin didnt wrestle last weekend vs. Utah Valley?  Im writing an article on the upcoming OSU/Stanford dual and I cant find much information. Feel free to email me: robert@enidmonthly.com

Cardenas and Garvin wrestled at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday. Cardenas lost to a wrestler from West Virginia in sudden victory. Garvin beat his opponent from Lehigh.

I have no knowledge about Provo. He missed all of last year with an injury. I don't know if he is ready to wrestle yet.

The NCAA wrestling tournament is in Cleveland this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Stanford has qualified wrestlers in 8 of the 10 weight classes which matches the most that the Cardinal has ever sent to nationals. 

Stanford has had a good season, recovering from a slow start and overcoming season-ending injuries of two of its best wrestlers Hunter Garvin and Lorenzo Norman. The Cardinal finished 2nd at the ACC meet behind Virginia Tech with 2 conference champions and 3 runners up.

Based on the seedings, none of the Cardinal would be expected to compete for a national championship. But they certainly could work their into the top 8 which would be All American status. 

Wrestlers with seedings
125 - Nico Provo (7th)
133 - Tyler Knox (15th)
141 - Jack Consiglio (10th)
149 - Aden Valencia (10th)
157 - Daniel Cardenas (9th)
165 - EJ Parco (27th) - an amazing story, Parco started the season wrestling at 149, then bulked up to 165 after Garvin's injury and finished 3rd at ACCs to qualify for nationals
184 - Abraham Wojcikiewicz (28th)
197 - Angelo Posada (9th)

Every one of Stanford's wrestlers is eligible to come back next season plus Garvin, Norman and the freshman class. The team is trending up. I am bullish on Coach Ayres and the program he is building. These guys are good and will be fun to track as the tournament advances. I'll post a scoring link once it's available.

7 of Stanford's 8 wrestlers won their opening match, including a major upset at 165 where EJ Parco upset the 6th seed, a returning All American from Nebraska. Parco got a reverse and takedown at the buzzer to win. 

Stanford is currently tied for 7th in the team competition. Next round begins at 4 pm pacific.

Perhaps I am the only one here who is paying attention to Stanford wrestling, but this is going to be the most successful NCAA tournament ever for the Cardinal.

After day 2 of 3, Stanford is in 6th place teamwise. The Cardinal has never finished in the top 10. 

Stanford is assured of having 4 All Americans for the first time ever. Topping the list is Aden Valencia who will wrestle tomorrow afternoon for the championship at 149. He becomes the 4th Stanford wrestler in history to make the finals.

Nico Provo (125), Tyler Knox (133) and Angelo Posada (197) will compete earlier in the consolations. Each has made the consolation semifinals. They will finish somewhere between 3rd and 6th. 

Two others almost made All American as well. Daniel Cardenas gave up a takedown with 13 seconds left in his elimination match to lose 4-1. EJ Parco lost in sudden death. 

Consolation matches begin tomorrow on ESPNU at 8 am pacific. Finals at 3:30 on ESPN.

Valencia winning nationals as a freshman is amazing! In the finals, he upset the #1 seed from Penn State as the #10 seed. He's set the bar high for himself :)

Aden Valencia upset top seeded and previously unbeaten Shayne Van Ness for the national championship!! I am so proud of the entire wrestling program. Left for dead 6 years ago when Bernard Muir tried to kill the program. Seemingly abandoned by Coach Rob Koll when he was offered a job as head coach at North Carolina. But Bernard then made a great hire in Chris Ayres who came in from Princeton. Tonight was a peak moment for any Stanford fan.

Stanford wrestling's performance at this year's NCAAs wasn't just the program's best NCAA performance ever, it was among the greatest NCAA overperformances of any team in Stanford history.  It topped the 2015 women's gymnastics team that made the super 6 as an 11th ranked team and is in range of the two 15-seed Women's tennis teams that won the 2016 and 2018 National Championships.

#18 Stanford had qualified wrestlers in only 8 of 10 weight classes, but all 8 contributed in big ways:

Stanford's 8 qualified wrestlers were expected to earn 29.5 points based on typical points scored for their seeds, but they earned 68.5 points, with all wrestlers contributing points and 10-seed champion Aden Valencia earning the most points above expectation in the whole tournament.  

With so many top-5 programs on campus, it's easy to gloss over a 6th place finish. But Stanford's wrestlers accomplished something truly special this year.

That was an incredibly exciting match. Very competitive and back and forth but Aden never let up. He kept attacking, putting pressure on VanNess throughout and had to hold on several times barely able to prevent Van Ness from scoring which would have lost the match. 

Gutsy, gutsy takedown in OT that could have gone either way but he really toughed it out. 

After match was very emotional with his teammates, coaches, and especially his sister.

Valencia came back from a big deficit in the quarterfinals to upset the #2 seed. He was behind 7-2 but got three 3rd period takedowns for the win.

He was also down 4-0 and 5-4 in the round of 16 to the #7 seed. Valencia got a takedown with 33 seconds remaining for another clutch victory.

Stanford's conditioning was superb. A number of matches swung to Stanford late as opponents seemed to tire.

Agree with MGym being the top finishing men's team. I don't put much credit in MWP making Final 4, that's essentially the same as a participation trophy given the gap between #4 and #5 in men's water polo. 

Our men's sports programs have not been performing well the past several years. Men's gymnastics is the only men's sport to win a national championship since COVID. Looking back at Stanford's NCAA titles since 2004, Stanford has won 50 NCAA championships, with just 14 men's titles (men's soccer x 3, golf x 2, water polo x 1, VB x 2, gymnastics x 7).

The hits keep coming for Stanford sports.

Less than 2 weeks after the most successful NCAA tournament in school history, three Cardinal wrestlers have entered the transfer portal.
2x All American Tyler Knox
2x All American Hunter Garvin (who missed most of this season with an injury)
Lorenzo Norman (ranked as high as #4 at 174 pounds early last year but has missed most of the last 2 years with injuries)

I believe that all are grad transfers. Knox in particular hurts. He leaves a big unplanned hole at 133 pounds.
