MBB: Stanford 93 -- Louisiana 66 -
skip75 - 11-18-2025
Stanford is favored by 20.5 over the Ragin' Cajuns, with an over/under of 138.5, giving an implied score of 79.5-59. Louisiana is 1-3, having beaten Southeastern Louisiana 58-52, and losing to Ball State 75-64, Tulane 66-62, & McNeese 88-62. They were picked to finish 9th (out of 14) in the Sun Belt Conference. Their first-year coach, Quannas White, played for Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma. He spent 8 seasons on Sampson's staff at the University of Houston, the last 2 as associate head coach. Their roster consists of 4 returnees, 10 transfers, and 3 freshmen.
One of Louisiana's top players, Jamyron Keller (#14 6'3/210 Jr G) has missed the past 2 games with an injury. The Oklahoma State transfer leads the Cajuns in scoring (17.0 ppg) and assists (3.0 apg).
Projected starting line-up includes:
#3 Darian Finister 6'5/185 Jr G Transfer from Kansas St & Sam Houston St is scoring 11.8ppg and leads the team with 1.7 steals/game;
#5 Joshua Lewis 6'7/185 Fr F Highest ranked high school signee in program history was ranked the no. 64 player in the country and no. 17 small forward by ESPN in the Class of 2025;
#6 De'Vion Lavergne 6'3/170 RSo G Scores 9.8 ppg, has 2.8 apg, and is tied for team lead with 5.5 rebounds/game. Transferred from Lee College where he was a JUCO All-American;
#10 Jaxon Olvera 6'5/190 So G Transfer from Pepperdine scores 16.0 ppg, is tied for team lead with 5.5 rebounds/game and leads(?) team with 3.2 turnovers/game;
#23 Kyran Ratliff 6'8/205 RJr F
Also on the Louisiana roster, but redshirting this season is a transfer from Tyler Junior College, Rahman Olajuwon. The 6'8/195 So F is the son of Hakeem and the brother of Stanford commit Aziz.
Hopefully some of the players who have been dealing with injuries and illness can get more involved tonight. The schedule will ramp up a bit on Friday with Seattle U. and the Thanksgiving weekend Acrisure Invitational games in Palm Desert with Minnesota and either Santa Clara or St. Louis U.

Sorry for the thread drift, but I recently learned that ULL and Stanford have something in common: both schools lack an official mascot. Ragin' Cajuns is the school's "spiritual" nickname in a fashion not unsimilar to Stanford's Cardinal. Apparently, ULL has had a bulldog, Cajun man, a chicken and a pepper as mascots, and the current push is for an albino alligator mascot named Albineaux "Al" Boudreaux. But, as I've already mentioned, there is no official ULL mascot at the moment:

LOUI is a guard-dominated team: Keller and Olvera.
The matchup with our Okorie will be front and center.
We should out rebound them and be up at the half easily to cover the 20 pt spread.
Stanford can win the "Points in the Paint" battle and then get FTs.

A few random things:
- Stanford (somehow) got a vote in the AP poll this week. So, for a week at least, we are tied for 41st best team in the country. That lone AP voter is probably being removed from the panel as I write this...
- Okorie is up to 3rd in the country in scoring. After game #1 this season, I was crossing my fingers that he doesn't transfer. Now I'm crossing my fingers that he doesn't go to the NBA (actually, I'm always happy for our guys when they make the NBA).
- I hadn't been paying much attention to recruiting lately, but 247sports has us with the #14 recruiting class next year. Smith is doing nearly as well as Haase so far.
- The team this season is scoring 1.2 points per possession with Okorie on the floor (awesome), and 0.9 per with him off (abysmal). That's gonna have to change if we want to finish better than the predicted 17th in the ACC.

Well, there are 3 minutes left in the game and we are well past the over (91-63 so far), and Stanford should beat the spread unless LA goes on a late run. Stanford is led by the OK twins: Okorie (26 points) and Okpara (22 points).

93-66 final score. It was close until about midway in the first half (in fact, Louisiana had a lead at 22-21), then Stanford went on a 19-3 run to finish the half. Similar story in the second half, where that 15 point lead was stable until midway in the half, when Stanford just turned it on and pulled away to as much as a 30 point lead when the bench emptied.

I was at Maples tonight, first time seeing the team this season. Easy win, not a large crowd, no LSJUMB.
Yes recency bias, and yes the opponent was not good, but Okorie looked pretty electrifying! I am thinking that in all my years of watching LSJU M BB, the only other freshman guards who moved so differently from other players were Todd Lichti and Brevin Knight. Maybe also James Harden at ASU. Russell Westbrook of Ucla hardly played as a freshman and was dynamic as a sophomore. Pretty good company for Okorie. Let's see if he can keep it up against more legit competition.

Another ex-Pac12 player he reminds me of is Gary Payton, the elder.

What impresses me so much about Okorie is his ability to create something, spark something, break down a defense, far more than most players.
It doesn't always lead to a score. But if a defense is set up, seemingly solid and prepared, he's gonna be the guy on our team with best chance to disrupt that, get them off balance, and lead to a chance at a inside bucket or someone left wide open on the arc.

Jason Kidd was also an amazing freshman guard in the Pac-10.
Okorie jumps off the screen, doesn't he? We are so lucky to have found him, you can already tell he is a gamechanger. When is the last time we had the quickest player on the floor playing for us? (It has to be Brevin). Okorie has the burst, and the stop and start quickness that is so difficult to defend, and the handle to go with it. We have been so vulnerable to the press over the years, and he is going to be extremely hard to press with his quickness. His shot looks pure, and in the end game, it is invaluable to have an over 80% FT shooter. He is creative with the ball, clever in the lane, and a smart and willing passer. He is facile with both hands, some of his finishes with the left while going full speed and floating are incredible, and he passes well with the left too. He also reminds me very much of Brevin on defense, he plays passing lanes well, but has picked the pockets of opposing guards with straight man-to-man pressure.
There are 2 plays from the game that were 'wow' plays that highlight his pace. Watch the play at 3:07 and the play at 4:12 from this clip. He is just moving at a different speed. We may not have played great competition yet, but this kid should bring the fans back to Maples.

So... which team posts fewer losses this season --
Our Football teams, or this BBall squad?

Yeah, I don’t think the MbB team will have fewer than 9 losses. I mean, I’d be thrilled, but let’s see what happens when we start playing good teams.

Too late. According to the words of the Prophet John Oliver,
What is "reverse woofing" or "anti woofing"?
