MBB: Stanford vs. Seattle 7PM, ACCNX - skip75 - 11-21-2025
Stanford hosts the Seattle Redhawks, who should be their toughest opponent of the young season according to the point spread and all of the ranking systems. Stanford is favored by 11.5 and the O/U is 148.5, making the implied score 80-68.5. Seattle is 3-1 after 4 home games, the lone loss coming on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Cal Poly to pull out a 73-71 win. The Redhawks were picked to finish 8th in the West Coast Conference behind Gonzaga, St. Mary's, USF, Santa Clara, OSU, WSU, & LMU (ahead of USD, Pacific, Pepperdine, & Portland). They are in the top15 in the country in both FG% (54.1) & 3pt% (43.2), but are shooting a pretty dismal 63% from the free throw line. They have been outrebounded in 3 games.
The starting line-up in Seattle's first 3 games was:
#0 Braydon Maldonado 6'0/171 Sr G Spent 2 years at Metro St in Denver. Leads team in scoring (23.3ppg) FG% (62.7), 3pt% (58.3) & FT% (15/15). Chips in 4.0rpg, 3.0 assists/game, and 2.0 steals/game;
#1 Maleek Arlington 6'3/215 Sr G Spent 2 seasons at Idaho St where he was on the All-league defensive team both years. Leads the team with 5.8 assists/game, 2.2 steals/game - and 3.2 fouls/game;
#6 Houran Dan 6'10/220 So F From China, went to HS in Arizona. Starts each game, but averages only 11 minutes.
#15 Will Heimbrodt 6'7/220 So F From San Anselmo, starred at Archie Williams HS, and was PoY in the Marin Co Athletic League. Leads team with 5.0rpg & 3.0 blocks/game. Averaging 17.3ppg on 62.5% from the field, 56.6% from 3 - and 50%(!?!) from the free throw line. Missed the 4th game with an undisclosed injury;
#21 Jun Seok Yeo 6'8/218 Sr F From South Korea. Spent one season at Korea U & 2 at Gonzaga. Averaging 11.8ppg, 4.3rpg - and 3.2 turnovers/game.
Even when Heimbrodt is healthy, based on the minutes distribution in prior games, it appears that Seattle uses a three-guard line-up a lot, with all of the guards being in the 6' - 6'3" range. Hopefully Stanford can take good advantage of their height & length.
Before the competition takes another step up next week, it would be great to see: 1) more consistency than I've witnessed in the last 2 games; and 2) continued development of the depth in the rotation. In the Louisiana game, it was good to have Stinson back in action, see some more time for Skrinda & Giltay, get a 3 from Agarwal - and 5(!) 3s from Grant. I continue to have faith in Smith & staff to get the most out of their players and to show development over the course of a season. I will be having our Big Game Eve dinner with tailgate partners, but hope to keep an eye on this game as well as the women's soccer game.

We lead 41-37 at the half on a last-second 30ft(?) trey by Dent-Smith, but the game was really back and forth, with Seattle leading early, and then both teams pushing the ball, then going cold and trading turnovers, and so forth.
Okpara has 11, Rohosy has 10, Okorie surprisingly only 6 at the half but leads the team with 4 boards. Giltay has 3 blocks!
Looking for Okorie to get back on track scoring in 2H.

We led by as much as 13, but Seattle went on a 9-0 run as we are 0/9 and 1/14 FG in last 4+ minutes. Back to a 4pt game 57-53. Come on, here we go!

Ouch. Some ugly shooting stats in 2H (2/19 FG at one point). Flush this and move on to the T-giving tourney.

Not hitting shots is one thing. But against a springy defense, the team seemed completely flustered and unable to even take a shot at times.
Hate to say it, but when players look visibly frustrated at each other as happened often in the second half, it's a poor coaching job.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. We lost by 8, at home, to Seattle. At one point we led 57-42 and ESPN was giving us a 96% chance of winning. Seattle closed on a 35-12 run.

I was at Maples. LSJU missed a lot of outside shots (at least a few of which were ill-advised) in the second half as others have noted, along with *9* missed free throws overall.
Seattle #1 did play decent defense on Okorie, per Skip75's game preview.
And Heimbrodt had at least half a dozen blocks, and I don't think many were as the primary defender. He seemingly came out of nowhere over and over with very well timed swats, without fouling. Played a game high 35 minutes and had 13 pts and 5 reb in addition to the crazy number of blocks. Player of the game from my perspective.

This was my thought exactly. The inability to even generate a decent shot, using passing or screens or whatever, was reminiscent of some of the worst offenses of the Haase years.
Hopefully this is just early-season struggles because of all the new players and not a trend...
