WBB: Stanford 98 -- Lehigh 43 - crackpot - 11-22-2025

Still trying to come down off that Big Game win. Wowie.

Lehigh visits Maples for the first time in its history. It's a homecoming game for three of their players--Gracyn Lovette (Marin Catholic), Belle Bramer (Carondelet), and Keshia Vitalicio (Archbishop Mitty). They'll play at USF on Tuesday.

The Mountain Hawks beat Drexel on Tuesday, 71-57. They have four players who average in double figures, including Bramer. They are currently 2-3.  Last year, they won the Patriot League Championship, and their coach was named the league's Coach of the Year.

Good start -- 11-0

Swain has found her groove. Two steals, one assist, and 6 points in 5 minutes.

MAS and Somfai playing at the same time.  Seems to work.

The driving lanes are open today. FasTrak not required.

RE: WBB: Stanford v. Lehigh - martyup - 11-23-2025

After first Q, it's 25-9.  We're shooting 86%/50% so far.  Nice basketball.

Stanford is schooling Lehigh.  At 7:09 in the second it's 35-11. Our shooting has cooled off a bit, down to 80%. :•)

I love the high arc Clardy puts on her 3 point shots.

We now have Somfai, Eschmeyer, and Agara on the court at the same time.  I love this line-up.

Wow! At the half it's 52-18. In the first half we shot 73%/75%/100%. Agara has 18 points, Somfai 9, Swain 8. Not a load of rebounds because we're shooting so well.

RE: WBB: Stanford v. Lehigh - martyup - 11-23-2025

Halfway through the 3rd Q, Agara has 24 points and is a perfect 10-10, 1-1, 3-3.

RE: WBB: Stanford v. Lehigh - 2006alum - 11-23-2025

Mostly liking what I'm seeing so far - better ball movement, better presence in the paint on the offensive end, and tighter handles on the way to the basket. (much of which may just be how undermanned our opposition is...)

But: we've taken 6 3pt shots, and if ever was the game to build our confidence shooting outside, it's today. I'd like to see us use games like this to build confidence, because we absolutely will need to be a credible outside threat in conference play.

Other nit: we're surprisingly mediocre one on one in the paint on the defensive end. Been surprised that undersized Lehigh posts have been able to beat our post defenders one on one fairly regularly.

RE: WBB: Stanford v. Lehigh - martyup - 11-23-2025

After 3 quarters, we lead 75-37.

Amborn still hasn't missed a shot or even had a ball touch the rim this season as she comes in and hits two more 3s.

Amborn finally hits the rim as she makes two free throws.

RE: WBB: Stanford v. Lehigh - here4WBB - 11-23-2025

Papadaki and Lauren Green on the court -  96-43 with 60 seconds to go.

RE: WBB: Stanford v. Lehigh - martyup - 11-23-2025

Final score 98-43. We shot 66.7%/53.8%/100.0. We were 15-15 from the charity stripe.

Agara, Amborn, and Ogden were perfect in their shooting. No missed shots.

Why even schedule a mega-marshmallow like this? Build confidence? Forget it. Play backups a lot. Perhaps. Better than an intra-squad game. Doubtful. Try new offensive or defensive sets? In principle a good idea, but did it actually happen?

RE: WBB: Stanford 98 -- Lehigh 43 - martyup - 11-23-2025

It was nice to see Eschmeyer get 17 minutes on the floor.  She led our team in rebounds with 7.

Also, Amborn in only 7 minutes had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and an assist.

We had 5 players score in double digits.

Lehigh won their conference and went to the NCAA tournament last year. Stanford probably wasn't expecting them to have dropped off this much.

Kim Mulkey schedules cupcakes like this every year and her team routinely makes it far in the tourney. While it may not be the most exciting game for a fan to watch, there's value in games like these. Alternatively, it can be tough to get good teams to travel out to Stanford - and there's only so many cross country trips this team can take on with the ACC schedule. So - I imagine that there's a few factors at play with creating the schedule.

Very solid game for Amborn! Her performance today would suggest that she can more than just a shooter, which is quite encouraging.

RE: WBB: Stanford 98 -- Lehigh 43 - M T - 11-23-2025

I was at the game while listening to WVB. After WVB swept Cal, I listened to the WBB game. (Yes, there’s a delay)

Late in the game, the radio announcer was pointing out how we were above the best ever Stanford FG%, but with the subs in, we started to drop. Had we not shot (or not missed) the final 3pt shot with 5 seconds on the clock (and no shot clock), it would have been a Stanford record (and, I think, a NCAA-best this year)

But no one should begrudge the players who only get a few minutes a year on court from going all out during that time. And, the final shot would’ve put us over the century mark.

Yes, it was a weaker team, but it was a great game offensively and a pretty good game defensively. 15 for 15 FTs doesn’t care about the quality of the opponent.

My only regret today was that I didn’t make it to the MWP game.

The Mountain Hawk is the Lehigh mascot.

Baez87 - Baez87 - 11-23-2025

Lots of reasons to love this game! It brought many moments of excitement and joy to Maples today. There wasn’t a great turnout, but there was great cheering and enthusiasm by those of us who attended the game.
We won handily, which may have surprised our coaching staff. Lehigh had won their conference last season, their coach had earned conference Coach of the Year, and they are considered to be a very scrappy team.
Three of their players have Bay Area connections, so it made sense that they had been invited to play at Maples. Coaches often schedule games in locales where family members and former fan can attend.
As the game developed, it was clear that Stanford had the edge. The other team was scrappy throughout the game—and even put up 19 point in the third quarter. But, in the end, we doubled their output of points—a real drubbing to be sure.
What stood out to me though, was the intensity that Stanford played the full game. The game was physical and Lehigh contested the play, but they wilted to Stanfords ball pressure, physical play, fast breaks, and three-point production (more than we seen in the past few games).
Game play was fairly well divided among the team, with no one playing more than 23 minutes and ten players getting 14 or more minutes in the game.
Everyone got in the game, and no one got better postgame victory pats and hugs than Carley Amborn, who played almost more minutes today, than she had played in the entire season, scored 10 points in seven minutes, still has not missed a shot as a Stanford player, and most importantly got rebounds and held her own on defense. This is a major development for our team!
This was a strong and necessary lead-up to the games we will be playing over the remainder of the pre-season. We will be facing strong opponents in the next few weeks, each game we play will test us and teach us. Today’s game showed the team what it could be if it went all out, played full speed, and shot instinctively! The team needs to know what it feel like to be in stride. The team and the coaches need to experience the feeling of playing to potential. Clearly, they know that the coming seasons bears many serious challenges and some bitter losses, but they need to have a strong image of themselves, with which to guide future successes.
They may have gained that today.
