Spencer Jones and Maxime Raynaud: NBA starters -
burger - 12-02-2025
Due to a rash of injuries on the Nuggets, Spencer Jones has been starting for them for the last 5 games. The initial results weren't great: 1 point against the Kings, then 0 points against Memphis. Not too surprising because Spencer has mostly been used as a defensive specialist.
But a flip must have switched after that. Spencer scored 9 against the Spurs and then 16 against Phoenix (both career highs iirc).
Then last night against Dallas, he went off: 28 points on 15 just shots, 11-15 from the field and 4-6 from three.
Spencer is still on a two-way contract, meaning that he can only be active for 50 games. I won't be surprised if he gets converted to a real contract before the end of the season.

Jones is almost certainly getting converted to a real contract when he hits 50 games. The Nuggets save money by keeping him on a two-way until then.

I hope he holds them up at gun point. Love it when a Stanford Guy like Spencer does well and gets paid.

Spencer is definitely one of the Stanford alumni we can all be proud of. Best wishes for his continued success, earned by putting in the hard work. (He’s a great follow on LinkedIn.)

We should add Raynaud's name to the thread title. Starting Dec. 8th vs. IND, Raynaud has essentially replaced Drew Eubanks in the Kings starting lineup. Over his last three games (two of which went to overtime), he's averaged 35 min a game and 15 FG attempts. Double-doubles in all of his last three games (avg 19pts/12reb), all three with FG% above 50%. Things are looking up for him.

Done. IIRC, when I first posted Maxime was third string in Sac and barely playing.
Color me unsurprised that Maxime is doing well. By his senior year, his offensive game was excellent, and he has the size and hops to compete in the NBA.
But he's going to need to be a better defender than he was at Stanford if he's going to be a legit starter in the NBA. I always thought he was a little soft against physical centers. That's something I'm sure his coaches are working on with him.

Yeah, he's had some pretty unflattering double-digit +/- ratings up until very recently. Against the Rockets, he was +3, which is the only positive value in his last five games. I think part of it is playing that elevated defense required of him as a starter.
The Kings are down about 15pts to the Pistons right now with about four min left in the 3Q. Raynaud has the only positive +/- on the team (+2) with 18 min played so far.

Jones played 43 minutes earlier this week in the Nuggets overtime win at Phila. DNP tonight due to hurt ankle and illness. He's shooting 41.6 % on threes for the season, 32 of 77.
Raynaud had 8 pts and 7 reb and 2 blk for the hapless Kings at Chase Center. They lost to GSW 137-103 and are 8-30, second worst in the NBA. He started and played 26 minutes and found himself guarding everyone from Q Post to Draymond to Podz to Steph Curry himself! His two blocks were of Curry and Draymond so he can tell his grandkids about that some day. By my count he had 6 double-doubles in December! He has 15 total blocks this season and is shooting 31.8 % (7 for 22) on threes.

I think Sacto is the oldest or second oldest team in the NBA. Westbrook (37), DeRozan (36), McDermott (34), Schroder (32), LaVine (30). Old...

Spencer Jones has been making some fantastic posts on LinkedIn - not your ordinary NBA channel. He's truly a class act and is constantly challenging himself to be better. I'm glad to see that he's doing well in the NBA and finding his role. He's a hgh IQ player that is putting in the hard work. The post below is well worth the read imho:

Spencer is being converted to a regular (not two-way) NBA contract:
https://www.si.com/nba/nuggets/onsi/news/denver-nuggets-make-roster-decision-with-spencer-jones
It looks like it's a 2-year deal (rest of this season and all of next) for $2.4M total. Not bad for an undrafted guy!

Crossposting myself from the NBA discussion thread:
Quote:Meanwhile, it looks like Maxime has hit a slump with the Kings. He's been out of the starting lineup since 1/25, replaced by Domantis Sabonis, who has been on and off this season with injuries. Maybe Sabonis has turned the corner on his health and is a more reliable starter now. The Kings also recently signed fellow rookie center Dylan Cardwell to a four-year contract. Cardwell is an amazing rebounder and shot blocker but not as offensively productive as Maxime, though right now I'm not sure Maxime is currently offensively productive either.
Also, the Kings continue to be the Kings.
The Athletic published a ditty on how their trade with the Cavs "shows a lack of foresight and direction." Hard to argue with the details.
