I think it was during the South Carolina game when the announcers commented that Stanford wasn't the same 3-pt-shooting team that it normally is.  Even after last night's game, Stanford is 61st at 34.5% 3PT%.  (Individually, Jump (41.2%) is 54th.  I don't see Lexie in the NCAA standings, but Stanford lists her as 23/49 = 46.9% which would tie for 11th with another player who is also 23/49. Ah... maybe you have to have 2.0 3PT per game.)

This fact/impression affects how teams plan to defend against Stanford.  If Stanford is less of a 3-pt threat, they can clog the middle more and do more weak-side help.   Maybe Oregon didn't plan on focusing on stopping 3PT but instead focused on stopping Brink.

I agree that Demetre would have been great to see in this game as she is money from mid-range and that is a total zone buster.  However I disagree about Brink’s mid-range.  She can hit the shot but she is far from consistent with it.  It’s a little like Jones can hit a 3-point shot but I don’t love her taking it.  I really like Brink’s current mentality (and presumably what the coaches have asked her to do) which is mostly drive from the high post and try to establish position in the low post.  They are such high percentage shots and when she has it going are pretty unstoppable unless she is double teamed.

It does seem that Brink as lost some of her confidence in her jumpshot, so I'm inclined to agree that I don't want to see her taking them this year until Tara is convinced her shooting form is back.  But last year Brink was 37% from three point range, and 65% from the free throw line.  Her ability to hit from distance and thus drawing a tall defender out to the perimeter was a part of how we opened up the interior.  This year she is 0/3 from three point range--has hardly taken any--and is 47% from the free throw line.  So something is not right with her shooting. 

On the other hand, I don't see Brink as heavy enough to play rockem-sockem robots in the paint with players who are her height and much heavier--she needs to have the threat of pulling them out.  Sabally got the better of Brink last night--Brink scored 5 chiefly because she only got 5 shots off, and had 0 offensive rebounds.  Sabally usually got position on her and it was rare when Brink could get the ball close enough to the basket for an easy layup.

A jump-shooting Brink would absolutely kill a zone as shorter guards would be responsible for defending her on the perimeter.   Or forcing heavier players like Sabally or Prince to come racing out to the perimeter in the man, which would have opened up all those back door cuts.

That is why I miss Brink's jumpshot, as spectacular as she can be inside against lesser players, I think last year's Brink was more versatile and dangerous.

Great recap as always, 81. I agree that Oregon will get more and more dangerous as their players heal, return, and gel. And I've always been so impressed by Rogers, actually, much more so than Pao Pao. It might be injuries, but her high school coach said she was the best player they'd coached, including Candice Wiggins, and so far, I'm not seeing that. Rogers, by contrast, has lit us up several times in both Duck and Trojan uniforms.

The box score sure can be deceiving. It says Wilson had no steals and Brink had three, but honestly, I sure seem to remember Wilson picking Pao Pao's pocket at least once. Did Brink really have as many (3) as the rest of the team combined?

Our post lineup is in an interesting flux stage at the moment. I'm with 81 that I liked the look of Brink taking some jumpers last season. It really stretches the defense, and it works nicely with our Princeton offense to have her be able to catch and shoot in addition to drive. And like 81, I agree that Brink just doesn't have the size to match up with big interior posts like Sabally. It's not that she's not physical - she is - but there's only so much physicality you can bring in that relatively narrow frame, and unfortunately when she can't use her torso as effectively, I think she ends up getting called more for fouls on hip checks and extended arms. Sabally can get away with a lot simply because it doesn't really look like she's in motion.

The other reason I'd like to see Brink look for more jump shots is that once Lauren Betts is on board next year, we will not need Brink to hold down the 5 as much. I don't want to jinx things and look too far ahead, but Betts looked better than just about anyone at the U19 worlds despite being one of the youngest players, and I think we'll want to get her into the lineup as soon as possible. I'm not really sure how you do that, keep Brink at the low post also, and still maintain a Princeton motion offense. So something will have to give there. A problem for the future, but it does make me think about how to think about developing Brink's skills.

Speaking of a surplus of post talent, wowsers did Kiki (in 3 minutes) and Fran (in 5) leave a positive impression. I actually felt like both were more impactful thank Brink was in this particular game. Fran, in particular, basically stopped Oregon's momentum at that crucial period in the 4th when they cut it to within 7 with 2.5 mins left with two blocks in a row and a great fast break feed to Lexie. Compare that to the two times Brink has exhibited some questionable decisionmaking late in the game (both in the USF loss and at South Carolina), and it's interesting to think about who to staff at which positions at what points in the game. Belibi was equally clutch when it counted down the stretch at Gonzaga, so it's good to know that we can sub our bench posts in and count on them when it matters (needless to say, Prechtel has already shown her worth in that role!).

The only other thing I'll note is that the few times Oregon tried to press, we seemed to handle it pretty easily. Interestingly, I actually don't think our problem is the same one as many Tara teams of the past (crumbling under the press late in the game), but rather that we just let our foot off the gas pedal and get sloppy. As others noted, a lot of our turnovers were unforced and lazy. Whether or not we get past the Elite Eight is going to depend on whether or not we can contain those lapses to a few possessions a game or the better part of a quarter. At Tennessee, South Carolina, and now with Oregon, we've built big leads only to let them narrow almost entirely due to our own sloppiness.

Last thought: I am already dreading the end of the Hull Era. If we lose all of Lexie, Lacie, and Wilson next season, we're really going to need our next generation of guards to step up, because we will have so much post talent but will have a real deficit by comparison at the 1 and 2. Jones can play those positions, sure, and I guess we could go with a monster lineup of Jones + Brink + Betts + Belibi/Prechtel/Iriafen, but that lineup does not strike me as one where the Princeton offense will flourish. I wonder if we'll see a return to the Triangle down the road? We'll also lose a lot of 3 point shooting, which is absolutely critical to breaking zone defenses, something we've had a *lot* of trouble with in the past when more of our offense was dependent on the McPhee/Carrington style driving to the basket.

I know that teams in other conferences are cancelling or postponing games, but it doesn't seem like anywhere near the rate of the Pac-12. Are the others not required to test, or what?

I can only speak to small colleges where the testing requirements diverge dramatically.  One team tests every other day; another team tests only those who are symptomatic.  Guess which team has more DQs?  

It's ridiculous.

Even more ridiculous, said often-testing-school has a policy of shutting down team activities if 3 positive tests in program - not on roster - in program.  And this on a team with 18 on roster due to Covid do-over.  Meanwhile, Stanford has 5 out on Covid and plays at WSU.  

The rule should be:  if you have enough non-Covid players to compete, you do it.  That minimum can be 7 or 8 or 9, but you certainly don't need 10 players to compete.  And given that none of the kids testing positive even feel sick, it makes the restrictions all the more silly.

Look, we are coming to the point as a society of just dealing with this as another kind of flu bug.  Might as well get on with it (though getting as many vaxxed/boostered as possible, as well as prudent safety measures should continue for a while).  BTW, did anyone else watch the Knicks-Celtics game last night at MSG?  NY was blasted by Omicron - not that long ago - yet MSG was packed and from TV the % of mask-wearers looked to be in teens.  

Let the kids (college, HS, junior high) play, unless they test positive.

That said, it was a thing of beauty to watch how we got Lexie open in the corner time and time again.   She was not just standing there, but running to the corner, turning and receiving the pass for the catch-and-shoot almost immediately.  Worked for Jump a couple of times too.  Some of the nicest choreography I've seen for some time.  Tara's offense, at its best, is indeed an exercise in choreography.

That was one of the exciting things I was looking forward to, especially with her being close to the Curry family and there was an article mentioning how Dell Curry gave her some lessons on how to improve her shooting. I really hope she can regain that shot. It will make her that much more of an offensive threat and therefore make our team that much more versatile.

As 2006alum pointed out, with the addition of Betts and the probability she will get at least decent playing time, that would probably push Brink to the four, which will necessitate the need for her to regain that jump shot. If she does and Betts can make an instant impact, however that will allow Brink to avoid foul trouble as much with maybe Betts drawing some of those fouls instead.

I have to join in the dread of losing Wilson and the Hull twins next year. Even though we will be stacked at the 4 and 5, losing those three will give us major vulnerabilities in the backcourt. We really need our underclassmen to step up and Nivar might be our most critical freshman in some ways, even more than Betts. Given the type of players we have in each year right now, losing out on Citron and Miles in this year's class and Rice next season really hurts us in terms of team needs.

CA regs are among the most restrictive in the country. Santa Clara County is, if anything, even tougher. The spike in cases is due to omicron which is no worse than th common cold. Insanity.

While I agree it is time to turn the corner on how to deal with the virus, 1500 Americans died due to COVID yesterday (per The NY Times tracker).  Common colds don’t kill people like that.  Even the flu causes about 1/10 as many deaths in a typical flu season.  Omicron does appear to be less severe than precious strains, and especially for people who are young, healthy, and vaccinated (for example, our student athletes) the risk is low enough that it is understandable that they may want to get on in life.  I would caution, however, against completely dismissing its danger, especially for the unvaccinated and those with risk factors.

Late to the game here, and I won't repost what others have already said about the game other than to give a big "Wow!" to Lexie. That was some seriously great shooting. I loved how her teammates mauled her after the game - show's how much this crew supports each other.  A couple other random thoughts:

- Exactly 0 assists for Oregon in the first half, and only 4 for the game. Can that be right? Assuming it is, that's a pretty concerning stat. The only ways to explain that are 1) Not scoring a lot (but they scored 68) 2) Getting a majority of your points from the line or 3) A lot of dribbling after the catch to create your own shot. I typically don't have a lot of faith in teams that play the style of #3. In fact, I'd say Oregon played a pretty good game last night - yet they still lost by 12.
- Graves tried the "We almost had 'em, but they beat us in the end" claim. Gimme a break. I think you have to get it within a few points to make that claim, not "down to 7".  We pretty much owned that game. Personally, I was never nervous.
- I do think Oregon is the most talented team in the P12 next to us, and I think they will beat AZ. If both teams are healthy, I still like our chances at their place and in the P12 tourney.
- Really like how Tara is using the lineup. Pretty much an 8 player rotation with some seasoning from Kiki and Demetre when needed. With every practice & every game, the roles are becoming clearer and the players are getting more comfortable with each other. Just need to stay healthy!
- Give it up for the Sportsbooks. The line was Stanford by 9.5, and go figure - we were up 12 and they had a 3 in the air with 17 secs left. Those folks know what they are doing :>

Tara seemed to think Gonzaga was already down here, having played Portland the previous night.  But as was pointed out, Santa Clara was supposed to play AT Gonzaga.  A bit confusing.  Maybe Tara talked to Gonzaga before they returned home from the Portland game....

Tara was very high on Wilson and Lexie.  Pointed out that Wilson had 4 assists and 0 turnovers, along with excellent defense.

Praised Lexie, but also gently ribbed her about her 6 turnovers--"You trying for a triple double?"
