Boring, full of cliches, unduly sanguine.
Sure, we may be a better team by the end of the season, but so will our opponents!
No specifics about the "options" that are allegedly available. How about the option of dropping the slow RPO?

I understand about the threat of losing access because of an actual tough question but the reporters need to do a better job. Are any of the attendees being paid? If I was their editor (and I’ve spent 55 years working for all the networks, etc) I would demand a tougher approach. It’s the editor’s job to take on an ornery coach or SID if they don’t like the question. The reporters should not be afraid of asking.
Maybe... “Coach, your offense was succeeding against Oregon’s bench. The game was over at halftime realistically. Admission requirements block some players from entrance and block others from working to gain admission. You just said that you’re looking forward to sleeping in your own bed and to next week’s crowd. Have you noticed all the empty seats in the stadium this year and the preponderance of USC fans three weeks ago? So what can you do long term to get back to a competitive level? Please don’t say “execution.”
He’ll probably walk out but the point will have been made. Follow up questions the rest of the season would center on when is a losing program enough for him?
Of course would never happen. But I’d be satisfied if he would just get pissed off. Would show that he has a personality.

Who even covers Stanford for Bay Area? Steve Kroner (been around forever) writes articles in the Chron for both Cal and Stanford. But he’s not a beat reporter per se. They don’t have one.
The lack of interest in the Bay Area on both sides of the Bay is obvious. So why should anyone ask tough questions (which Bay Area reporters don’t seem to do much relating to any team, college or pro) when so few give a darn?

If you're not ready to ask tough questions Lex then don't attend the conference now matter for which outlet you write for. I can't even estimate the number I've attended. Sometimes it's apparent that the corps has blown it. My favorite PC memory was made by the late, legendary NBC producer/reporter Bob Flick. Can't remember the story but after 5 minutes it was apparent that the conference was a bluff. Out loud Bob said, "This is a piece of shit. Mark, pack up your crew, let's go to lunch." Brought down the house.
Shaw is a robot. His lines are scripted and repeated in so many words over the years. He has guys like Herbsrteit fooled but he doesn't fool the Cardboard.

I remember some of Mike Leach's answers to tough questions when Wazzu would lose.
One reporter questioned his play calling. His response? "What are you, some kind of idiot or something? Next question."
Another asked him after his nth straight loss to Washington what the excuse was going to be when they lost the next year. "Go back into your cave." was the response.
And there was one where he talked about the players worrying too much about their "fat little girlfriends".
At least that provided some humor.
Not sure if asking Shaw tough questions would help the program much, but it would at least be interesting to hear what he had to say. Probably not too much different than what he is saying already.

Leach was great theater. So were the FBI when Patty Hearst was caught. Steven Weed (her boyfriend) gave a conference the week she was kidnapped (if she was). He had a mustache so large that even when speaking you couldn't see his lips. Cameraman Jack Wolfe turned his head and whispered to me, "It's impossible to shoot this idiot out of synch."
If Shaw even gave one answer on Leach's level it would show he has a pulse. That would be a revelation.

Yes, I remember the Mike Leach pressers. When Wazzu lost to us in 2015 on a botched last-second FG, one reporter justifiably questioned him on his time management and his insistence on passing the ball late in the game when running the ball would have been safer and eaten up more clock. In that particular instance, Wazzu was up 28-27 and had 1st and 10 at their own 45 with 3:51 remaining in the game. A good opportunity to kill some clock. But Leach stuck to his air-raid scheme; and Falk promptly tossed his second INT of the half to Quenton Meeks. Stanford got the go-ahead FG on the ensuing drive, and Wazzu's kicker couldn't connect when time expired. And, yes, that game was the difference between Stanford winning the north and WSU winning the north in 2015.

Wazzu ended up in the Alamo Bowl in 2018. The Cougs had the ball late in the game clinging to a two point lead. Leach could have played it conservatively and given the ball back with a minimal amount of time. He had a third and six situation. He decided to throw the ball, completed it for the first down and closed out the game.

P.S. Anyone watch the Washington UCLA game Friday night? The Chipster did the same thing. It worked.
P.P.S. We were damn lucky to win that game in 2015. Wazzu's kicker was something like 4 for 4 going into that kick and it was very makeable. Fortunately for us he pushed it to the right.

Yes, we were fortunate to win that one (which, by the way, was our last win to-date against the Cougars). That game was Stanford's first encounter with Grinch's speed D; and it stymied McCaffrey. Hogan started running the ball, which got us back in the game. Still, defeat seemed near certain when Wazzu's FG-kicking team took the field with only seconds left. In retrospect, the 2015 season now appears to be the absolute peak of Stanford football in this millennium. But if that Wazzu kicker had connected and the rest of the season had played out the way it did (including our loss at home to Oregon later that season), either the Trojans or the Cougs would have played Iowa in the Rose Bowl; and with three losses, we probably would not have cracked the top ten in the final rankings.
