I was watching a Tennessee game. During a fast break, a player had the ball on a fast break for a layup, but also had an option to pass out for an unguarded 3-point shooter on the baseline.

If that were Stanford's Hannah Jump on the wing, I think money ball would say to pass it out to the 3-point shooter.  At 1.896 points per 3pt attempt, it is better than almost any layup percentage (and, better than Belibi's dunk attempts).

As we all know and have been writing about, attendance is a problem. Looking forward to the upcoming games -- starting with S Carolina after tonight at Cal Poly SLO, I continue to be pessimistic about our attendance. Getting butts in the seats is a challenge, and we all need to do what we can to help. Bring friends to games, tell people about how much fun it is to come to these games, etc. But also critical, when you have tix and are unable to use them, do what you can to get them to someone else. One of the big problems is that so many good seats are held by season ticket holders who don't come. There are lots of ways to lay off tickets -- give to others, sell on stubhub, etc., donate back to Stanford, etc.  

I think it would be great if a few days before each game, all season ticket holders got an email saying, we hope to see you there, but if you can't make it, here's what you can do to make your ticket available to someone else.

From a monetary view, is in-person attendance important?  Aren't TV appearances and TV viewers more important financially?  (Ok, "TV" is an anachronism.... Sorry)   Shouldn't we be talking about how to get more publicity for the public to tune in? 

I probably will skip going to the So. Carolina game if I think I will have 8 people within 6 feet of me yelling for maybe two hours.  There is a limit as to how much I trust my mask and vaccinations.   The incremental value of going to the game in person versus seeing it on TV may not be enough to justify the potential risk of an infection.  (Covid is climbing again in this area - higher now than anytime except in the 3 peaks.  Flu is climbing rapidly.  So is RSV.)

I'll go to the Cal Poly game and sit up in the top of the stands, with no one behind me yelling down the back of my shirt.

Carolina game if I think I will have 8 people within 6 feet of me yelling for maybe two hours.  There is a limit as to how much I trust my mask and vaccinations.   The incremental value of going to the game in person versus seeing it on TV may not be enough to justify the potential risk of an infection.  (Covid is climbing again in this area - higher now than anytime except in the 3 peaks.  Flu is climbing rapidly.  So is RSV.)

I'll go to the Cal Poly game and sit up in the top of the stands, with no one behind me yelling down the back of my shirt.

Stay home then. I will be there along with what I hope is a packed Maples Pavillion on Sunday! This is not a thread about Covid so keep your comments in that regard to yourself. It is not simply about money. Who wants to play a game in an almost empty arena.  How is that fun? Player experience and fan engagement matters and our student athletes deserve a chance to play in front of large crowds and on national tv. Sunday they will get to experience both and it’s going to be awesome!

From a monetary view, is in-person attendance important?  Aren't TV appearances and TV viewers more important financially?  (Ok, "TV" is an anachronism.... Sorry)   Shouldn't we be talking about how to get more publicity for the public to tune in?

Card10Fan, if you want to ignore the viewpoint of a decades-long fan, and a member of the Cardboard for a decade or so, you don't have to be dismissive.

This thread was, for the moment, discussing attendance.  I was offering why one such person was going to be missing from the game on Sunday.  I rather doubt that I will be the only one making this choice for similar reasons.  We've noted before that the crowd (and, specifically, the season ticket holders) tends to be much older than the students.

There are other reasons that people might find in-person games less than optimum.  What bothers me might not bother you.  What bothers you might not bother me.  There is nothing that will work for everyone.

• I find the "Let's Make A Deal"  theme of the PA system and display board annoying.  ("Cheer for one of 5 shirts being tossed to the first 5 rows").   This is a basketball game, not a circus.
  
• The volume level of the PA system's music(etc) can be annoying.
  
• The parking situation can be annoying (While having a garage available is good, I've spent 45 minutes waiting for the garage to clear from a volleyball game. It still is better than trudging through mud.)
  
• Clearly some people find early games too early while others find late games too late.
  
• Ticket prices (but the fixed price per month Cardinal W Pass works fine for me)
  
• Not me, but others may find a Sunday afternoon game to conflict with other plans.
  

But I think the biggest problem is that college sports are mostly ignored in whatever media the surrounding public watches.  I don't recall Google News ever showing an item on WBB.  It is rare to get more than a one-sentence mention at 11:29:45 PM on local news channels.  If you're already invested in WBB, there's plenty of coverage.  If you're into sports on PAC-12 networks, I expect you'll hear about it a little bit.  But if you're not, almost nothing.

Even on the Cardboard, there's been more recently about Musk and Holmes than coverage of ALL Stanford sports.  Without looking, can you name all the Stanford sports in action this weekend?  How about just the ones in a national or conference championship tournament?  How about just the ones in which Stanford is in the top 10 nationally?

Beep... Time's up.   Don't worry, I'll trust you to grade yourself.

There are so many things going on, absorbing people's times, distracting them, that it is hard to try to pull more people in.
