Yes, she has too slow pacing and turns over the ball. And she is also horrible because her coach NEVER sits her to rest. But that is one of Stanford’s worst defensive lineups with only Brink being considered “good” or “exceptional” even when sick. You can score against that Stanford lineup easily but there is more spacing on offense that helps Stanford score. That lineup could never get separation for that reason.

Tonight it was rebounding that cost us the game.  This was one of our best shooting games of the season.  We shot 48% -- 44% -- 92.3%.  UW shot 43.1% -- 30% -- 76.2%.

We were out rebounded 34 to 24.  UW had 11 offensive rebounds to our 2.

Sorry to disagree with CardFan and MV, but I thought going big with Haley bringing the ball up was absolutely the right thing to do. I was sorry Tara didn't stick with the big lineup till the end. Unfortunately. even then, Fran understandably got a little tired and Cam was clearly under the weather.
The Fran and Cam duo made sense with Haley at the 3/1 and Demetre and Jump.

Wash doesn't have quick, pesky guards who need to be defended by Agnes. But, those stockier, bigger guards had the game of their lives when compared to 81's statistics. And, Daniels had a great game.They deserved the win.

This is a deep disappointment, to be sure.  Echoes of USC.  I do disagree with several of the comments above, but I do agree that some emotional disappointment is justified given our talent level and our lack of performance today.

Here are the factors that led to our loss today, in my opinion:

1) Elle Ladine, with relatively few minutes (8th on the team) and a low shooting percentage on the year, gave Washington a massive jolt on offense that we were not prepared for.  This has always been a weakness with "scouting report defense," when someone who is not on the scouting report "goes off" with a career game.  Tara did attempt to adjust and Ladine did not do nearly as well in the second half as in the first, but most of the damage was done, Washington's confidence (and the lead) were up.  She helped them get out to a 10 point lead, and while we recovered, it was 10 points we would have liked back.

2) The other weakness of scouting report defense is that it often works great for Friday games but not as well for Sunday games.  Most of our bad losses over the years do occur on the Sunday game.  The answer is obvious--we have several days to implement the scouting report for Friday, and one day for Sunday.  Clearly we were not as well prepared for Washington as we were for Washington State.  And I imagine there was an emotional let-down after such a joyous win in Pullman.  The classic trap.

3) Rebounding rebounding rebounding.  If you look at the other stats you would think we won--we shot 48% compared with their 43%, we had 16 turnovers while they had 11, but that is not a terrible differential for us, we had 16 assists which is not bad, defensive rebounds were about even.  But what killed us--probably the biggest factor in the loss--was that we had 2 O-boards and Washington had 11 O-boards.  Giving then second and third chances that many times neutralizes defense.

4) Brink played, but perhaps she should not have played.  She did OK, but you could tell she was slower up the court, less accurate in the mid range, and not able to muscle her way in the paint as well as she ordinarily does. 

5) Benny Luna has overtaken Missy as the worst official in the Pac 12.  He may have been terrible for both sides, but that crucial out-bounds call was in error.  The ball changed rotation and was slightly deflected when Daniels scraped it.  A big momentum shift.  And there were other calls too, probably in error on both sides, but none at a more crucial time that that one.  But the game, of course, should never come down to a critical call, and we had more opportunities that we blew after this one.

In sum, our defense recovered somewhat from the Ladine surprise and cut the 30 second quarter points to 15 third quarter points, but could not sustain it.  Our offense showed its usual problems against a team that packs the paint, and while Demetre helped immensely, it was not enough in the end. 

We will drop in the rankings and are now tied with Utah (cheer for Oregon) in the Pac 12.
