Stanford field hockey defeated Cal 2-1 in the final regular season game. Besides defeating our cross-Bay rival--which never gets old!--the win secures a spot in the ACC conference tournament in North Carolina next week.
Stanford is 10-7 overall but only 2-6 in the 9-team ACC. One of those wins is over highly ranked Duke. Nevertheless, I'm guessing that Stanford will need to win the conference tournament to make the NCAA's field of 18 (10 conference winning automatic qualifiers, 8 at-large). Out of 82 D1 teams, Stanford had an RPI of 28 entering tonight's match and was unranked in the 20-team coaches poll.
To recap the regular season, Stanford defeated the following teams, with RPI ranking as of Oct. 27:
#5 Duke
#21 Cal
#38 American
#43 Holy Cross
#44 UMass-Lowell
#52 Northeastern
#61 UC Davis x 2
#73 Bellarmine
#75 Central Michigan
Stanford lost to:
#1 Northwestern
#7 Wake Forest
#9 Syracuse
#14 North Carolina
#16 Virginia
#18 Boston College
#20 Louisville
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
