My sister just informed me (with some incredulity) that her neighbor's niece was admitted to U$C for the frosh year, spring semester.  This is a family we've known for more than four decades.  All of the women in the family share a genetic disability with respect to processing math functions and have less debilitating (but still present) disabilities with respect to reading and knowledge retention.  The grandmother of the $C admittee, for example, cannot tell you whether 3/4 is larger than 2/3 or vice versa.  Her daughter (my sister's peer) flunked out of Mitty and barely squeaked by freshman algebra as a senior at her public high school, by working two hours a night on algebra.  I'd met her daughter (the girl who was admitted to U$C), and while she is a very nice, sweet young lady, I genuinely would have been surprised (if not shocked) if she'd been admitted to one of the lower level state CSUs.
Two other thoughts, though.  I've heard from several sources that U$C can be susceptible to the "full court press."  One of our good friends was admitted there via spring semester, due to what can only be called carpet-bombing admissions tactics.  He did well there too, president of his fraternity and he did graduate.  And knowing this family, I have no doubt that this was their strategy.  And...her family is quite wealthy.  Olympic Club, St. Francis Woods, hobnobs with billionaires wealthy.
