I wouldn't call ST&S a soft major at all. (Or, put another way, if ST&S is the softest Stanford can offer it's in pretty solid shape.)

What he said.  I seriously contemplating majoring in STS (but eventually settled on Chemistry).  Athletes like STS as a major because it is very flexible.  There is only one absolutely required class (STS 1).  The rest of the requirements are more a la carte from a menu.

That doesn't mean that STS is not rigorous.  You can look at the courses in the requirements.
