I take it with a grain of salt when he says he has no favorites and that he doesn't know why people think Stanford and Michigan are on top. He called Stanford his "dream school."
Here's my read of the tea leaves, taking the new statements in the overall context of his recruitment:
Stanford is #1, but he has to pass admissions.
Michigan is #2, but his spot may not be around when his admissions decision comes.
He doesn't really have a Plan C at this point, but he realizes he can't rely on just Plan A and B, so he wants to create the impression that he's wide open.Â
