The real party playing hard ball is Ca.l. They gave D.ykes a small extension with a minimal buyout. Don't even know if it includes a raise of any kind. They are daring him to go find another job, and aren't raising their offer to keep him. Usually coaches get raises by going after other jobs. Ca.l isn't budging. Never thought I'd see such a bold stance from Ca.l. We're talking about an institution that paid the legal fees of the party that sued them over the CMS renovation!
In many ways, good for Low APR U. It looks like they will be able to keep Yikes without shelling out an outrageous amount for him. He pushed for a couple jobs hard, but was passed over, because, quite simply, he hasn't demonstrated enough at Low APR U to get anyone excited. The trajectory is good, and he did better than I expected this year, but he hasn't put together a "wow" season.
The risk with this approach is that in the next couple years, Yikes will have a great season and be a hot commodity, at which point Low APR U lowballing him (really, I would say they fairballed him, but in his mind he was given a lowball offer) is a reason to jump. But that would have been a risk even with a generous offer. And since there is about an equal risk that Low APR U tanks in the next few years, Low APR U did a good job avoiding being saddled with a ginormous buyout.

Spot on, man.
The problem for D.ykes is next year figures to be a very significant rebuilding season for him. People here have already discussed how good UW is going to be. Not like Oregon or Stanford are falling behind Ca.l. They are 4th in North at best in 2016, and depending on how Leach can keep things going and how much improvement OSU makes, D.ykes could lead Ca.l to the cellar and see himself canned next year. He of course knows all this, which is why he is desperately trying to find another gig. Knowing his major program head coaching career could be over at this time next year is quite a motivating force to find any power 5 conference five-year deal he can right now.
