Is Dykes even an average Pac-12 coach? In the Pac-12 North, Shaw and Helfrich have already won the conference, Leach has gone to bowl games twice now and exceeded expectations this year, Petersen was highly successful at Boise State and went to a bowl game with a freshman running back and quarterback and a rebuilt defense (need I say what Dykes' record was with a freshman quarterback?). Only Anderson at OSU has accomplished less than Dykes so far (and his record in his first year at OSU matches Dykes' first year record at Cal, plus Anderson was successful at Wisconsin). Ranking the P12N coaches, Dykes would come out 5th or 6th.
In the South, only Mike MacIntyre would rank worse than Dykes (not counting Helton because he has virtually no track record either way). So, Dykes getting a league average salary appears generous compared to what he has accomplished at Cal so far, which is decidedly below average.
Put another way, Dykes is getting rewarded for leading Cal to a bowl game this year... something that all but two other Pac-12 coaches have done. In a year where the Pac-12 got 10 teams into a bowl, getting to a bowl is hardly an accomplishment.
