Yeah, Stanford is clearly the superior football program.  I actually think Texas is going to turn around pretty quickly under Strong.  If I was a betting man I would bet that in two years Texas is going to be seriously back in the game. 

Each person has their own inscrutable reasons for wanting to go somewhere.  I've got two kids who had more fulfilling college experience than I and they weren't at elite schools.  I enjoyed Austin more than Palo Alto, but I chalk most of that up to immaturity.

I tried to do the legal pad with the pluses and minuses of each school with my kids when they were looking at schools and it never worked.  They wouldn't listen to reason.

I just had to deal with being away from home when I was younger.  These kids have to deal with being away form home, dealing with DI football, and dealing with challenging academics.  I don't have any problem understanding why someone might want to try the lessen the stress of one of these variables.

Some kids will never want to leave home, but I think we also have to remember the family pressure involved. Some families will push their children out of the nest, but not all. In the last few years I've come to realize something about being a sports parent. I've been coaching or watching my daughter play basketball for eleven years now. She's not on the scholarship track, but if she were going to play college basketball, and a coach on the other side of the country were trying to sign her, it would be hard knowing that she'd be playing games that I wouldn't be able to watch.

Two years ago when JuJu Smith was fielding offers from all over the country, I knew there was no way he wasn't going to SouthernCal. There were at least forty or fifty family members in the stands at his high school games every Friday night, some wearing jerseys, everyone else carrying signs and bags of confetti to throw for each of his touchdowns. I knew he'd never leave them.

It's easy for us to say a kid from Texas or Georgia or Florida should take this great opportunity, but in some situations, Stanford might as well be the dark side of the moon.
