I said this in another post, but I feel it should be repeated here. I believe that this administration has decided that the LSJUMB is too offensive for today's society. The tradition of poking fun at opponents' fans, traditions, and communities does not align with the current move on college campuses to ban anything that might offend anyone. IMO, the administration is using alcohol and other incidents to reach their goal of culling this "offensive" organization from our school. So, all of the arguments to the administration about how great the tradition of the band and how it helps the members cope at Stanford will fall on deaf ears.Â
The argument to the administration, IMO, should be that it should resist pressure to censor free speech because it might offend someone somewhere. The LSJUMB is like SNL. It takes current events and pokes fun and uses satire. There is nothing wrong with that, despite the gripings of Iowa fans about FarmersOnly.com, etc. The Stanford administration should stand behind the band's right to ruffle a few feathers. Instead, it is taking a cowardly approach that will strip the LSJUMB of its character and uniqueness.Â
