It's a little disingenuous for "Jane" to complain about how things unfolded when at the outset she said she didn't want charges filed against Tumpkin, didn't want money from him, or even an apology. What did she want?Â
Maybe Mac could have canned Tumpkin on the spot, but how can he do that without giving Tumpkin the opportunity to defend himself? Jane would have made it far easier on herself if she went to the police straight away. That way, the police would have informed Mac and the CU AD what was up, and they would have been forced to act.
The most unsavory part of this whole deal is the fact CU has a defense attorney on speed dial to deal with issues like this. The university should not be spending a dime on defense attorneys for its coaches or players. If they get in trouble with the law, they should have to figure out their own legal defense options. The AD shouldn't even bother making referrals to any criminal defense attorneys. There should be a firewall between criminal activity on the part of athletes and coaches, and any AD involvement whatsoever with criminal defense attorneys.
