Wondering if this public discussion is supposed to be a warning shot to RS for some reason.

I think Richard Sherman's contract is up at the end of the 2017 season(?). Perhaps they want to let him know that his popularity with the fan's will not allow him to hold them up in the negotiations. If he wants "too much money" for his next contract, they want him to know that they are perfectly willing to trade him which he decidedly doesn't want.
