These absurd looking results stem from two problems with how the Capital One Cup scores. One is that the multiplier for B sports gives a ridiculous edge to FCS schools. All you need to do is win FCS football (like James Madison did) and you're automatically in the top ten with 60 points, even though James Madison would get crushed by dozens of schools that scored zero points. It's nuts, and they should change FCS football to an A sport.
Denver, on the other hand, has finished in the top three in Ice Hockey (1st), Lacrosse (3rd), Skiing (3rd), and Men's Soccer (3rd). Sure, those aren't exactly football and basketball, but that's a pretty legit set of top 3 finishes. The problem, of course, is that the Capital One Cup weighs top 5 finishes so heavily (and Lacrosse with the absurd B sport multiplier) that even if Denver finishes unranked in everything else, it pushes them toward the top. But that one bothers me less if they're competing against FBS teams and coming out in the top 3.
