Maybe they'll cut costs sufficiently to make themselves a business. Don't know. But this latest pivot across the industry -- with various people singing the praises of video -- will also end in tears. Video is also fairly pricey to make work, and its economic attractiveness is based on advertisers' misguided belief that people actually watch the junk. (Podcasts are probably also a racket but for slightly different reasons.)
Anyway Facebook will someday decide people should be sharing runic texts or something. (At which point the media will ditch all the video and podcast folks and start recruiting classics majors from Hampden College.)
It seems to me the media needs to get people to pay, directly, for their product. That's the commonality between the NYT, Wapo, TPM, Politico and The Information -- probably the best performing (and best hiring) orgs on the landscape. (I am a bit biased here.)
So if you like journalism, make sure you pay for (at least some of) it.
