I understand BC, and I assume Coach Shaw's perspective includes your points regarding Chryst's experience.
Regarding "QB controversy", about 30 years ago I recall that Montana was playing great, but revealing some "aging QB" issues. Meanwhile the relatively young Steve Young was emerging from the 49ers bench. Coach Walsh elected to deal Montana to the Chiefs, go with Young, and this proved to be a productive decision.
5 years ago I was a Raiders season ticket holder watching Carson Palmer struggle within a poorly coached, substandard roster organization. The team dealt Palmer to Arizona and used the next year for a season long tryout of two potential QB's. Terelle Pryor and Matt McGloin each received 8 starts. I think this "8 games each plan" was decided prior to the start of that season, which made sense to me. As it played out, neither Pryor or McGloin revealed himself to be a legitimate NFL starter, but at least they got their opportunities to show what they could do.
