I remember the Denny Green win VERY well. My wife was in the (old) Kaiser Santa Clara hospital, in the middle stages of induced labor with our second child, a girl. I had brought a transistor (well, portable, at least) radio but couldn't get any reception, so I spent a lot of time in the parking lot, listening to the game on the car radio. IIRC, SC had a field goal attempt at the end to tie. The first Stanford game I ever paid attention to (listening on the radio) was Ron Ayala/1969, my senior year in high school. The FG attempt made me VERY nervous. But it missed.
And then I tried to convince my wife that we should name our about to arrive daughter Denise. She (the wife) is real Stanford football fan but that was a bridge too far. OTOH, the daughter, Eleanor, is an intense Stanford football fan, along with her brother. If I could have told my wife that this would be the start of a 15/15 run with USC, maybe she would have agreed. (But she would never have believed me.)
I was a frosh in 1970 and watched us break that losing streak to USC that went back to 1958. And I traveled to the Coliseum in 1971 to watch us paste them - a 15 point blowout. I was gone for the 1975 13-10 win and the 1979 tie. 1992's 14 point win (23-9) was the first time I'd seen us beat them since 1972. I've been in the seats for 9 of the 13 wins since then (not the greatest upset ever but in South Central for triple overtime and the wonderful, glorious, really, really good 55-21). It just never gets old.
BTW, I think this is going to mark a substantial move by me to the Card Board. RJ is working really hard on the Bootboard and I'll probably keep my membership - and I do LOVE the Sears Board, mainly for M and W soccer - but there's very little football conversation anymore on the Bootboard. Sad, but time changes everything.
